An Iranian actress has been sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in prison for starring in a film that shows artistic repression in the country, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Marzieh Vafamehr was arrested in July and received her sentence at the weekend.
In the 2009 film, ‘My Tehran for Sale’, Vafamehr plays an actress whose work is banned by authorities and is forced to lead a secret life to express herself artistically.
Vafamehr often appears with a shaved head and no headscarf, and there are scenes of drug use in the film, according to Iranian opposition website kalameh.com. Quoted from Yahoo news.
Is this what Sharia law is really about? to repress and humiliate women? or will Islam supporters say it is fair and right. Can they not see the irony of this barbaric gesture against a performing art?????
rizlared: It’s a depressing case of life imitating art.

Its a shameful and humiliating act and it will bring nothing but more bigotry for the Islam religion

It's disgusting, as is sharia law. I wonder if the actress thought her film would not be contraversial and she would be immune from any punishment as a result of the film. Surely she ought to have known that this punishment would occur, but of course the whole episode brings it out in the open what an oppresive regime Iram has.

The film was not supposed to have been released in Iran, according to the Australian produces, they say it was shown there illegally. Even so, this king of behaviour does nothing to bridge the ever widening gap Islam is creating with the rest of the world. Boban is correct, it will create more hatred and bad feeling, in my view this is when the Islamic leaders should stand up and be heard, showing that their religion can be tolerant. IMO

It is not just bigotry Bob, it is showing a definite lack of respect and inequality towards Islamic women, something many Moslem's say is NOT the case for Moslem women, but now we have real proof. This is the 21st century, Iran should and must realise the damage such action will cause.
I'd have sympathy but 2 of the posters on this thread are pre-occupied with attacking Muslims any way they can and find this poor woman's suffering a convenient tool to promote their own bigotry. I never see either of them posting on breaches of human rights in Christian or dare I say it, Jewish states.

Please, show me where any poster on this thread has attacked or voiced an attack on Muslims. The point of this thread was to ask how any one can justify lashing a women who has just performed in a make believe film, which now appears to have more truth than was first imagined.
Is it possible you could actually address the questioned behavior at hand, the women getting that punishment for her actions? How do you feel about that? We all, who do not live there and do not understand the government and religion, do have some collective feelings towards the treatment of humans. It doesn't need to be hatred for your religion or government necessarily but an outcry that the way people are punished for their actions. It does not seem equivalent consequences for the crime. However, I also want to address your need for respect. You absolutely deserve respect; it is important to remember to treat people the way you would like to be treated and I have no intentions of disrespecting you. But you also must understand for people to share their opinion on the treatment and or the behavior of your countrymen, for all intents and purpose is fair to express in most countries. I am not going to say the government is bad or that your religion is poor but I do think you need to realize where we are coming from as we should understand where you are coming from. In addition I would like to personally apologize for much of the behavior of our American soldiers. I personally do not think it right to try and completely govern other countries the way we feel is correct but you must understand we do care it isn't just about control but about a desire for people to be safe. At least that is how I feel and many other people here feel. Anyway, I just want to address the spite that seemed to be expressed in the previous message by rizlared and ask that you not come into the conversation with guns blazing and try to communicate with everyone. Maybe we could all get somewhere.

Oh please, as if the Irish and world press doesn't vilify Israel and the Catholic church every chance they get. Get a clue.
Whilst I´m appalled by the punishment, I just have to comment on how bravely and stoically this woman has accepted it. As far as I´m aware she has not asked for any sympathy, nor wished for her plight to be made public.
