Sorry to piss on your parade but countries who strive for peace don't have armies or at least they don't make and sell weapons to the highest bidder ...

But I will join you on the thanking those around the world who strive for peace. wine

By the way I meant no disrespect to those who served and died while "defending their country and/or protecting others", I believe they did so in good faith. wine

My comment was meant towards the governments who "con" young men into enlisting "for their country" then send them on wars that have nothing to do with peace or defending their country and everything to do with financial gain.

Wars are not very often about peace. Just my opinion.

This can't be directed at the USA. We have volunteer women soldiers too. And most folks in the reserve USA military have college degrees and are even doctors, nurses, engineers etc. They are not zombies.

I understand that soldiers follow orders without question ... and I would suggest also in good faith. I don't think governments however, are worthy of such faith.

From Wiki: Operating from a neutral country, Switzerland's army does not take part in armed conflicts in other countries. However, over the years, the Swiss army has been part of several peacekeeping missions around the world.

Tried my best to stay out of this one...I served for 22 years...And the statement about the Swiss Army made me laugh my socks off...

Peace keeping missions and Armed conflict are far to often the same thing......

Let's think about it

Kosovo.....Peace keeping

Korea....Peace Keeping and also "a police action"

Cyprus .....Peace Keeping....

Congo.......Peace Keeping....

In common ?

They all had ARMED conflict.....Slightly mixed up statement Eagle, sorry but all peacekeeping missions involve arms nd sadly far to often deaths...So you statement is not really valid....grin cheers

There is a lot more of piecekeeking than peacekeeping in this world, especially by the one arrogant enough to call itself The New World Order...(should really be ordure). Taking a piece here and there rather than helping any countries settle their cnflicts peacefully through negotiations without resorting to armed conflict. If armed conflicy simply cannot be avoided, then it really should be leader against leader and leave the countries people out of it all. If not, perhaps in the case of one population actually wanting war, then all others should simply bomb them back to that proverbial 'stone age'. Perhaps then there will no longer be any around to call itself The New World Order...and everyone on this planet can rest easy and get on with their lives.
Personally, I would like to see ALL armies reduced to those of Andorra and San Marino...hell, their SWAT teams carry crossbows! Nice...grin
Look them up...

I'm with you Eagle Woman.

To me, serving in the name of Peace means standing up against war and the evil behind it.

In my opinion a "good soldier" who "follows orders without question"
has lost a basic part of his humanity.
The right and obligation to decide and do what is right.
I feel pity for people in that situation.

Reminds me of the words from one of my favourite songs...

"You can lead a horse to water,
but you're never going to make it drink.
And you can lead a man to slaughter,
but you're never going to make him think."

I watched this Forum from the start .

Didnt realy want to comment as lots of folks have different opinions about War.. And its after effects on individuals who participate Positive and Negative .

I dont myself understand to much about Politics {nor do Politicians } its some sort of personal ego thing i think .

But me personaly do respect those at the moment in Foriegn Fields ,, and those who have given there life under there Flag .

And not forgetting those young lives that have come home with loss of limbs ,, and also those who have been mentaly Traumatised ..

Respect .
