I understand that a muslim can not marry outside their religion....

First of all, is this correct?

And secondly, if it is correct, why do religions try so hard to divide people.....
Why can't people have their own beliefs, as is everyone's right,
and still marry, and live in harmony......

Just a few thoughts I had, but am interested to hear peoples true reflections on this.... confused

A muslim woman can only marry a muslim man, so if she meets a non muslim and he converts she can marry him whereas a Muslim man can marry a non-muslim woman...

Christians and Muslims have been intermarrying for hundreds of years. No Christian sect as of yet has any interdiction against marrying outside their faith, not even the rabid evangelicals for all their pronouncements against other religions or sects. Muslims have long ago made accommodations to marry both Christians and Jews. It is as they say, we are peoples of 'the book'. The Book meaning peoples from the ancient Babylonian (post Marduk) religions, the OT and the New Testament. In the Muslim Koran, there is no conflict there. The Jews also have no laws or customs forbidding marriage with Muslims. Most families from the Middle East have relatives from all the major religions. The conflicts are all based on either one trying to dominate another culture to the point of accepting genocide as a viable option to total control, or seemingly to actually believe that (their) god has told them to 'take over' no holds barred...People generally don't much like being taken over by another, let alone wiped out, either culturally or physically; their own god never told them to give up and surrender...no God ever has.

ali110: A muslim can marry a Christian or Jew

But only if they convert to Islam, right?

As far as I know, both my grandmother and my father converted to Catholicism for marriage.

I believe my grandmother was Jewish. I'm not sure whether it was a male dominance thing, a survival tactic, or like with my own parents, religion was more important to my mother than my father.

I understand it was necessary for one, or the other to convert for a religious marriage ceremony, but I don't think it mattered which partner converted, beyond personal agreement.

I think there might have been some objection on my grandmother's side of the family, but that may have been to do with class, rather than religion. It made no difference to my parent's families as far as I'm aware.
