You have hit upon a subject dear to my heart...So many people are totally absorbed in themselves, soon everything becomes a mere commodity to them, to be discarded at will, animals being at the top of the list....

I have had three rescue dogs, a puppy from the RSPCA(I'm sure was part dingo not kelpie) and two other dogs from Animal Welfare, where one was an 8yr old red heeler cross, that would have been put down had I not adopted her. With some training, she was a gem and mourned by many when her hour came...My current dog, a border collie cross had come to Animal Welfare as an abandoned and very boisterous 6mth old puppy. The list of what she destroyed is long. Left for hours some days in my backyard while I worked, meant that her toys soon extended to the outdoor setting, most of the cushions and webbing were chewed beyond repair. To have scolded her after the fact would have been senseless. She is adorable and so bright and a gorgeous companion. Now, at the age of three, she rules the roost, but all I need to say is 'off' and she leaves the room.

Please read this book, 'The Philosopher and the Wolf', by Mark Rowlands...I came across it at a bookshop in Amsterdam airport while killing time. I couldn't put it down. Mark Rowlands, a philosopher and lecturer, writes about living with his wolf called Brennin. You want to know how much destruction a wolf puppy can wreak upon a household, when left alone? An unimaginable amount! How Rowlands deals with Brennin is one of the best narratives I have ever read. Tears pouring down my face by the end of the book.

This letter breaks my heart. I have a Maltese (Mia). I brought Mia for my now ex-girlfriend. Mia cost me $2200 and she is 7 now. When she was 4 she developed Fanconi Syndrome, we spent close to $12,000 on vet bills and I'm happy to say after a years of tough times she pulled through. It was easily the best money I spent because my baby is still with us.
Although I get visitation I miss her every day. When I see my little mama my world suddenly seems brighter. How anyone can neglect such beautiful creatures is beyond me.

I thank you for a given opportunity to read this book. I'll definitely look for it.

But speaking on a subject ... What angers and saddens me ... That the feeling of Being responsible is rolling downhill in our mankind society.

Thank you for your post, very moving wine bouquet

You know, A girl from work put that letter on a door to our lunch room .... after two weeks she had to take it off ... because of me. I was all in tears when I've seen it.

Ecpecially last words:

I died today

Love
Your puppy

But the truth needs to be known .... Have you ever seen Shelters full of unwanted pets? And when they do not places in cages the do kill them. What choices do they have?

I understand you fully handshake

People indiscriminately breed Pets, then abandon them!

Strange - as bad as it is mistreating an animal, when it comes to human life, some people have no conscience when aborting it!! some even try to justify it!! very mad

You are most welcome...I agree with you, Konigsberg. I think that the notion of true responsibility is rarely practised in western culture. The notion of convenience tends to creep in - if it is convenient to be responsible and to show responsibility, then yes - if not, nice knowing you and goodbye.

I have rescued horses, dogs, cats, and people, When they cease being "things' to people maybe they would value something that God has given the breathe of life to.....

NAKEDMUDPEOPLE: My daughters boy friend (husband now) called and asked if he could give my daughter a puppy, my response was as long as you have a vet on retainer my answer is yes!

As I was on my hands and knees scraping up the remains of my second couch, my daughter walked in and laugh she said I'm so glad you have a light heart about this and joined me cleaning. I'm the one that said you could have a dog.

Her dog is older now and is sickly, how do you care for an aging pet?
Do you let them suffer?

I have a 12.5 year old Collie, she has terrible arthritis in her hips but the dear old soul still plays with her toys, eats like a horse and is still as zany as she was as a puppy. As long as she has got quality of life she will be fine but the moment she loses that l will do he right thing for her. I'd say your daughter is the same position as long as her dog has quality of life its ok to keep them around. Sadly one day my old girls back legs wont work anymore and l will have to put her down but we are ok for the moment.

I am sorry Nakedmudpeople, for missing your post. doh

I hope Faithe have answered one. Thanks Faithe grin wine

I just would like to add ... It all depends on a pain and a ,,suffering your dog going through. They will never tell but, you can see it in their eyes.

I had to put down 10 of my Great Danes through the years. There was nothing to be done to make them happy and healthy. conversing blues

Last Fall I became an overnight host for an abandoned cat. It was really going out on a limb, because we can't have cats or dogs where I live. She (I decided it was a female) was more kitten than cat, a gorgeous Persian. Obviously mistreated, she would not budge from my doorstep. (I admit I tried to shoo her away). She was so persistent, yet so mournfully friendly, I found that I couldn't "turn my head and pretend I didn't see". I took her in, rounded up some cat food, water, and bedding. She knew I was a friend, and tried to talk to me in cat language. In this county, we have several shelters, and I called one. The agreed to take her in, but asked if I could keep her for two days. I said yes. I would have adopted her if we could have them here. Since then I have become an advocate for these friends God has given mankind, and am making donations to a particular cat house. The people who manage it are absolute angels. Pets do not understand all of a sudden not being needed, or wanted. My message to anyone considering a pet of any kind is to take ample time to read up on them. Everything you can get your hands on. If you find the research boring, then you are not cut out to be that pet's owner. Period.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! I had a 1 month-ish kitten turn up on my door step beg of Dec. She´s siamese & was meowing at my open door but didn´t come in until I invited her in. The weirdest thing of all, I found out later, is that she´d been at my ex´s house for a few days after he found her abandoned but his 2 dogs were not being very welcoming to her so she took herself off and looked for yet another new home. The strange thing is that for a kitten my house is a fair way away from his!!! Anyhow, I realised after a couple of days that she was not well with cat flu and became quite ill. Found out since that kittens can die from cat flu, but she´s doing grand and is gorgeous cats meow
