I have had three rescue dogs, a puppy from the RSPCA(I'm sure was part dingo not kelpie) and two other dogs from Animal Welfare, where one was an 8yr old red heeler cross, that would have been put down had I not adopted her. With some training, she was a gem and mourned by many when her hour came...My current dog, a border collie cross had come to Animal Welfare as an abandoned and very boisterous 6mth old puppy. The list of what she destroyed is long. Left for hours some days in my backyard while I worked, meant that her toys soon extended to the outdoor setting, most of the cushions and webbing were chewed beyond repair. To have scolded her after the fact would have been senseless. She is adorable and so bright and a gorgeous companion. Now, at the age of three, she rules the roost, but all I need to say is 'off' and she leaves the room.
Please read this book, 'The Philosopher and the Wolf', by Mark Rowlands...I came across it at a bookshop in Amsterdam airport while killing time. I couldn't put it down. Mark Rowlands, a philosopher and lecturer, writes about living with his wolf called Brennin. You want to know how much destruction a wolf puppy can wreak upon a household, when left alone? An unimaginable amount! How Rowlands deals with Brennin is one of the best narratives I have ever read. Tears pouring down my face by the end of the book.
