Border Collies are reputed to be pretty smart, although mine is probably not the smartest example of the breed.

we used to have a bull terrier x kelpie as farm dog, couldnt use him on sheep because he just loved to grab the wool.

But when droving cattle along open bushy roads he was the best. I am sure he could count, he would just disappear into the bush and bring out 2-3 head of our cows that had wandered off. He also used t6o try to cut out strays when they joined the herd. Was great to watch

no i have the opportunity to manage a large cattle farm in corryong, well i think its large 300 cattle,.but last weekend,i lost 35 head, and i couldnt find them the guy has 80 acres of dense bush thats not allowed to be grazed onas its an environmental envelope,so i gathered the cattle must be in there,so i got next doors red heelerto go in and find them, but he was too scared because of the wild dogs that are in there,so i drove him in on the four wheeler and dropped him off, and said fetch, and pissed off on the bike. hr or two later, still no dog or cattle, then out of the blue comes one steer then two then three, and all of them in single file cvame crashing thru the scrub, and right on their heels was little bobo tongue hangin out exhausted, but he did his job...i gave him a rabbit

Martia's choice - Golden retriever are the smartest breed followed by border collies.
Smart as in how many times you have to instruct them to do something before they understand and do it.

the smartest working dog/s I have ever witnessed were border collie x blue heeler. So well trained that when the owner lost his voice from throat cancer he retrained them to respond to different whistles.

Up in the strezlki ranges, in the pine plantations and open paddocks between, his favourite dog would sit on the horse with him in front of the saddle. Old Bob would give a whistle and off the dog would fly actoss the valley and up the hill over 1/2 kms away and round up the sheep. Old Bob of course, from the horse and the high point could see what the dog couldnt and would whistle the second dog in to go the other side of the flock.

Synchronised dog rounding up with no voice commands. Was magic to watch, and the trust that was between the owner, dogs and horse was beautiful to watch.

We were allowed to have Bobs favourite dog when he wasnt well enough to use him anymore. We also bred from him and yes his pups were just as smart

And how many Pomeranian owners are gay? I bred and showed dogs for a fair number of years. To me, the Wire Haired Fox Terrier is the smatest dog ever. Only dog that looks over its shoulder to make sure you are following for 5 km to get them back home. Love the breed(would never recommend them to anyone).

But all breeds have their place and purpose. Why have a Blue Healer in suburbia where it will go feral. Why have a Greyhound without room to run when it needs to move? Why have a Maltese trying to herd cattle?

Old saying "Horses for courses" applies to many things.
