...once their youngest kids turn 8yo.
Single parent benefits would be stopped and a newstart allowance given with the usual parenting payments working couples get.

What do you think?
I think it's a great idea as too many kids are growing up in families where their parents have never done a days work.

Personally I think people who should benefit are those still in relationships.

That would work wonders, but there arent enough jobs to go round. Its a political stunt, it just changes the name of the benefit, and makes you front up to their office so many times a week, but never a job. In other words its BS.

What you say about learned behaviour is correct... but being judgemental to why those parents dont work is not...

Anyway, each to their own. peace

Sadly, there are so very many people who are unemployable, and the only way we could resolve this is to create more schemes where they need to volunteer for their dole money, once the youngest child has reached school age... but there again, this poses a problem... what could they do ?
dunno

Often, some of these people are impaired in some way... physically or intellectually... conversing

Yes I think they should go to work once their kids are at school. Not only single parents but what about all the ones on dissability pensions. some of them are playing on the scemes as well . my back plays up at times but i still put in a good days work and I`m not putting my hand out for benefits

Hi ah Flossbonwave

Yes, hun, but your mentality is clearly in order... and also, I think its because we work, and have worked for years, that is doesn't seem as frightening as it might for others who perhaps who have not worked for a long time, as they may have low self esteem. dunno

Great idea, at long last. The benefits are there to assist while the child is a pre-schooler. Even then, if the single parent(often the woman) part-time family day care is a cheap, available option before school starts.

What a rort where up 'til now where single parents perfectly able to work, sat on their laurels until the child turned 16. I know one woman (a widow) who hasn't done a day's work in her life and refused to, even when her children were at school. She managed to get herself on the disability pension. Nothing wrong with her other than poor education. Both her children are gainfully employed though.

I thought it was 7yrs old as the cut-off, near enough anyway.

That's an age-old excuse for many people, tony.

Here in SA, the abbatoirs in Murray Bridge has had to import workers from China because they couldn't attract anyone to the jobs!! And you know what? That whole countryside is littered with long term unemployed who have several kids in toe and figure they get more money on the dole as a family, than if they had to go and work for the same money. Get them off their butts, I fully agree with the new plan. To think it's only happening because it will help to get back into surplus!

I can hear the uproar already!

Do you really think this is the point, whether you or I would work in an abbatoir? Where possible, we make choices as to which work we will do based on education, experience and interests. But work, we do.

I'm talking about those people who don't want to work and where, given the option of a working in an abbatoir or nothing, they choose nothing. What's more, choose to do nothing for years on end, taking lots of money off the tax payer and providing a welfare mentality role model for their children.

Personally, I would stop all animal slaughter, certainly the slaughter of pigs and cattle. We just don't need to keep killing these animals. But alas, I doubt that these folks are exercising a conscience vote by refusing to work at the local abbatoir.doh

It's incredible what a nation of DIY'ers we are!!...pretty soon, we could solve the entire u'e scene with all the new hardware stores springing up around the nation. We have one Bunnings store in
Munno Parra, an outer northern suburb, traditionally housing the lower income earners - it boasts being the largest in the southern hemisphere!

As I said, I work full time and as a single parent I find it hard to pay the mortgage as well as all the other bills, there are many ways to find yourself being a single parent, as I am a male it was never seen by me? This was not my career choice,
Blitz, You might be a single parent but you work full time so why is it hard to pay the mortgage?

I worked it out actually, the news on the tele came on... and I said... helloo... this is what Martia is talking about...

I know that many of our immigrants come and go freely... you need to remember that they dont have money in the bank...never have had.. because our refugees and immigrants from countries that are poor, have never kept their money in banks...

I was listening to the radio, and this point in question came up...

Most people from third world countries do not keep bank accounts... because they were too frightened to do so... about 3% only have money in the bank.... Its also a culture thing... they trade in cash, and their banks go constantly bubble up... so having a bank account is a foreign thing... and then they come here... and they are indeed introduced to our banking system... but until they have been here a while, they are well reluctant...
So I am guessing now...

When they go to Centrelink... they dont have a bank account... but it does not mean that they do not have funds... they just have disposable cash.. this is around the topic on the radio...

so that is why they can go back to their homeland every year for a spell. peace

arapaho: where are all the jobs coming from,
when single women find it hard to find work,

There will always be a percentage of unemployment. I hae worked with long term unemployed. And I can tell you, unless the person has a severe mental illness, most people got off the treadmill. We even had a dentist of all people, who had a family and claimed he had been unable to find work in his specialised field of dentistry. Guess what? After his protestations, he did comply and attended retraining courses, sent out tons of applications at the Federal govt's expense. He soon landed himself a fantastic job interstate and couldn't thank us enough!!

OK, the above eg does not involve a single parent, but had he been, whcih he could easily have been the case having been ltue, same scenario.

There are systems in place, retraining programs to attend, skills training course paid for, assistance with resumes, postage paid for applications, help setting up work experience with firms, and so it goes on. And if you have a disability or are in a special group for the day(single parents are definitely one of them!!), the govt and its contracted organisations will be there to assist the most motivated out there.
