Short term courses as per above are paid out of another bucket.
The person who is registered with a Jobseeking organisation and with Centrelink, is identified as requiring a short term training course(s) as part of their speicific return to work program, then this is paid for through that bucket, not any Centrelink advance.

Having being one of those unfortunate Aussies who has worked for more than 40 years, I have never had the pleasure of the Government giving me a handout.
While I might get a little bit peeved when someone asks for special dispensation to park their 2011 LandCruiser on the nature strip out the front of their housing commission place because there is not much room left when the 2012 V8 Super Modified Commodore Ute fills the single garage and the rest of the front yard barely hold the 40 foot caravan and the 30 foot boat, I do have to provide this person the due respect to the material gains they have achieved while not ever working.
Where can I sign up for one of these short courses? I have missed out on so much by working.

It's a fulltime job just ducking and weaving, working out scams and lying your way through the obligations that 'have' to be met to get your benefit ya know

and all Tax free I bet? Gee Wash you must be young, I been working 50 yrs.When my kids became old enough for me to look for work I did a course organised by the DSS, well more than one, but it was a real eye opener.

and btw for those that are interested ... I was a housewife for 20 odd years raising my children (my ex supported me up until I secured a job), I have a background in nursing... when my marriage went belly up... I did courses in admin... and guess what? I now work in a factory as a process worker ... I didn't care where I worked as long as I was paid the legistative amount, and it did not include shift work or weekends so that I can still take care of my children... even if they are 15 and 17

Ahhh Tony, I don't count the many years of doing the vegie garden and selling the goods in a street stall, feeding and collecting the eggs to sell up and down the road, let alone working working for my brother on weekends and school holidays, as earning a wage.
