I was listening to a conversation today - and the concensus was that it is not the Middle East we need to fear, but China - particularly as China has taken over America's debt...(well it's not Australia's.. but give it time... laugh) hmmm I wonder if that explains the flood of Chinese products on the market ... and why they are getting exceptional deals on export tariffs etc...dunno

Trading is good for everybody. That the US owes them money ensures they will take care of each other as a devalued dollar means China gets less and, it doesn't pay to undermine the very people who owe you mney as you may not get it back.

As for Chinese products it will take some years for them to reach western standards so in the meantime, enjoy your Kay tel potatoes slicer while I buy western tools made in the US, Japan and Europe.

Fear ...dunno .... how about viewing it as a future opportunity ?

China's workers are growing richer by the day and want to buy quality western goods.

Look how well Germany is doing for example, selling them high quality engineering products, such as cars for example.

thumbs up Great post and complete condensation of what is going on. We owe China money, they want to enable us to pay it back and, they want to keep their people happy by being able to work and buy our quality stuff and we want the crap they produce as throw away trivial items.

Problems? None.

Unfortunately the UK has very little engineering ability left in order to capitalise on this potential business bonanza.

Thank you Mrs Thatcher for such vision and for closing it all down.... frustrated

Very difficult at the time I suppose though to subsidise a steel industry until you can compete again. Who would have thought parity could have been reached to quickly. China's rate of growth has been absolutely astounding.

The M.E. will always be of interest to the West. As Far as China is concerned they are definitely making moves toward securing Asia, having just made a trade agreement with Japan to use Yuan & the Yen, instead of the US $ as their main trading currency. This moves saves both China and Japan the expense of using a 3rd party currency and of course the large expense of doing so.

Many financial experts in the West see this as the first challenge by China to advance their goal of taking over the dollar as the main trading currency. However it would not be a logical move on China's part to risk the strength or weakness of the Yuan at such a very early stage.

The US is considered to be in a Greece situation as far as their financial status is concerned, the main, or one of the main creditors being China. It is in China's interest that the Dollar stay as the world currency for as long as possible.

Kind Regards

Guess they never heard of electronic banking where no physical money is changed and where it matters not if it is in dollars, franc or pesos.

Fact is, unless one is a drug or weapons dealer walking around with trunks full of money it matters not what currency one measures a product.

As far as I am aware even in electronic banking the exchange rate would still apply, In other words the cost of changing Yuan/Yen to Dollar and in reverse.

Here is an interesting link explaining China/USA trading and China/World trading.

As seen in table 7 china’s 2nd most important trade partner is Japan and table 9 shows Japan as China’s top import supplier.

Yes, it is expected to save China about 3 billion in exchange rate and capital account charges..

China are also making a trade agreement between themselves, Japan and Republic of Korea. Looks like an China/Asia free trade agreement might be on the cards..
