Carl96190: No, I did not.
The reaction you experienced was similar to something that a Russian psychologist named Pavlov achived with dogs.

Its call pride Carl?
We are not dogs as you suggest! We are the envy off the modern world! We rate higher than your little mind will ever get?

If you are not proud off your countries best athletes going to represent our nation, a free Island Continent, then what the hell are you doing here?

Australia showed the world how too make money from this event, as we are a nation off sports playing people! Maybe not you Carl? But the rest off us have played a sport in some way,

I pity YOU!

kizzy27: I think Its appalling the waste of money spent on the olympic games.
These people are not heros, there are sportsmen & women .The heros are the people struggling to feed their families & they are the ones who cant afford the $2400.00 ticket price !
oh! for gods sake kizzy let it ride for once, sportmen and women are heroes.we dont have a gladiators arena anymore, this is the 21century,there is always poor people, and there will always be people well off,its a part of the human race, and if there is a chance for the majority to enjoy themselves so be it,as for the ticket price, the english govt made available specially built large tvs so the underprivaledged can actually watch the games, and while on that subject ,the poorest nations in the world are competingin these games ,they may not have money wealth, but they have wealth in friendship

kizzy27: The difference Is ide redirect the millions to find a cure for cancer ,or feed the world , youd,e start your own concetration camp for everyone not born to white parents living in your postcode.....

I think a gesture of world peace is worth more than any cure?

More than 140 nations have sent their best athletes to a games to represent our views on freedom and equality, by breaking down the differences between countries doing sport we can bring the world together in peace and harmony?

Sport has no religion! No restricted beliefs! No country of domain!

What we have is free people competing on free land to be their best and for two weeks all nations will be at peace on the one ground, I think that is better than the cure for cancer! A cure for world peace would save millions in an arms race, then the extra money could be spent where it should be! In heath and education! For the worlds people not just our own!

The Olympics are the very bone marrow off democracy?

My point was to still hold the olympics just not to make it such an over ostentasious extavaganza , and instead use the excess monies for good will.Does the figgure 9 billion dollars not seem excessive to you all?
Im sure the competitors would forgo the razzle dazzle if they had the choice to instead help the less fortunate,

Its become ridiculous over the top waste .

Kizzy, our PM has kindly donated $500m to the women of Indonesia.

"Under the announcement, Australia’s $500 million will support the Indonesian Government’s goal of providing nine-years of school education to every child.

The money will help build or expand 2000 schools and support 1500 Islamic schools to upgrade to meet national standards."

There you are... so if we dont buck about that... and we have not... well, they can blow the budget sky high for pure entertainment...

Go Green and Gold.

I've read through this thread and I'm left wondering if those of higher moral stature than myself who think the Olympics should be cancelled and the money diverted to find a cure for cancer would actually stop their own unnecessary expenditure: dish washer, washing machine, tv, CD player, lap top, car....the list goes on...and donate the money to cancer care.

Surely charity begins at home. I personally make a monthly donation to a charity and that is my choice. I have no problem with corporate donations to support the Olympics which I effectively pay by my purchases of their products.

This world is very fragile just now and consantly seems to be on the edge of darkness with one nation pitted against another and war never seeming too far away. Surely a few million, a drop in the ocean of International finance, was well worth spending to create an air of harmony and cooperation between different countries and cultures.

10,000 people volunteered their time to give us the joy of the opening night and for that I thank them. That's why the UK's opening ceremony cost 1/3 of the one in China.

There seems to be an awful lot of begrudgey about these games already both on here and on the likes of Fox News. Frankly I find it mean spirited.

Hi Godsgift I am a humanatarian I am involved both physically & finacially with organizations aimed at helping others.I am not begrudging a "few million" Its the excess "BILLIONS" that make me stop think! Each Nation that bids for the games has to give a quote ,the quotes are obvious lies as even with these Olympics they have blown out by 7 Billion dollars !!As I said before, Ive made a personal choice NOT to watch the games , not because I am anti athetes or I am unpatriotic It is simply my conscience and my own moral stance on the needless waste of "excess money" which could go towards helping others.
Godsgift I dont believe this makes me "Mean spirited" I believe it makes you part of the problem!

Ripple, Yes your right , you cant anymore because the IOC have countries jumping through hoops trying to outdo each other , The IOC demand countries build new you beaut venues when they already have appropriate venues all for the Glory of hosting the games a third world country wont host the games they would never win it they would not have the resources to compete !I believe countries would feel much more pride if money was spent more wisely and the proceeds generate went to help each nations needy , Then there would be a positive outcome not just a gold medal & a new stadium.

taking nothing away from the athletes...

the Olympics for me would have a lot more meaning if the playing field was ee. What do I mean by that?

It is great to see the smaller, less affluent countries competing but have your ever given it thought as to why we dont see them on the podium?

Developed countries have the money to pour into supporting their athletes, millions can be just spent on developing just one athlete, but competitors like Eddie the fish dont have the same access to training and facilities, giving an unfair advantage to richer nations.

Wouldnt it be great if there was a way of just having the raw talent and ability compete against each other without the artificial help that some get. That to me is what the Olympics is supposed to be about.

It is the athletes that come from nothing and make the effort to compete that get the gold medals from me, they compete in the true spirit of the games.

Apparently you lack the intelligence to understand the science involved. Pavlov was demonstrating how psychological conditioning works. The science is valid, whether it be applied to dogs or people.

No. It makes you negative and mean spirited. Do you honestly think yje £9 million would go to cancer research. You have 2 feet firmly planted in mid air. Quality of life is much more important than quantity.

Oh dear, what a shame there is so much negativity in this thread. I clicked on it hoping to share the excitment of the Olympics and connect with fellow Aussies who also feel patriotic about our athletic champions. Can we just put the politics aside for a short time and celebrate good will around the world for the only event where all nations come together in the spirit of fair competition, where young dedicated athletes demonstrate the very best the human body is capable of in various different sports. Can we not, beit briefly, be proud to live in this great nation. For me the Olympics is about what humans can achieve with dedication, persistence, fitness and positive attitudes. Go Aussies, I for one am cheering you on. :)
