Best thing is to get a citronella spray dog collar it should stop your dog from barking but they are not cheap but are definatly worth it as I have an American bulldog and she is loud but I put the collar on and she stops as the citronella irritates there sences

I think you have been very respectful about it Lil, tell the workmen that you have spoken to the neighbors about the dog and they refuse to take the complaint seriously and that maybe they could go over and speak with them before commencing. After all, your neighbors dog is not your responsibility.

Thanks everyone for you advice and opinions handshake

It seems barking dogs are a common problem in neighbourhoods. All was quiet this morning when the tradesmen turned up and I was releived. Not sure what they did with the dog but grateful they respected my request. Will give them a big friendly hello next time I see them and hopefully all will be well. Lifes too short to be tense with the neighbours.

Good to hear, you are right about being tense with the neighbours, and you never know when you will need them. I have always had pretty good neighbours. I often drop over food to the older lady who lives next door as she is on her own, save her dirtying up the kitchen for a meal for one.

I have a neighbour who love to let the whole neighbourhood know what they listen to, even at 2am. Has been doing this for 30 years and even had police around many times over the years. My daughter called me an old fart , saying it probably wasn' that loud. just me.

So she & fiance moved in here for 18 months saving money for wedding & home. Son-in-law works shift work and was home one day when the whole house was shaking from their music, upsetting their dogs & cats. He ended up taking his speakers to that side of the house, turned it up full bore and hid in the furthest room with all doors shut.

The neighbourhood has had a peacefull 2+ years since.

Was going for an afternoon walk and a neighbour's dog which usually stands at their gate barking was out on the street.

It came towards me, barking, I shooed it away and it came up and bit me on the back of my leg.

I yelled at it, it backed off and came in low, growling, for another go but I stood my ground and yelled at it .. it ran away still barking.

wash2u: Going to work one day and had to pass a guy with 2 dogs on leads to get in the door at work on Chapel Street, Melbourne. One of them latched on to my trousers and scraped a bit of skin. I told him he should control his dogs. After a few "%$$*^@ !&^$( and *(^$*" about not going near them (they were sitting on the steps), I walked through to the front counter and reported him to the Rangers.

Turns out he has had so many complaints and fines abut his dogs. And never paid any as he is "a victimised public housing tenant." Trouble is that the system has to wait until the dogs do enough for someone to go to the hospital for treatment before the Council can really do anything about it. And then have to have umpteen witnesses and videos of the "assault" to prove it is a "vicious dog."

As far as the dog that bit me this afternoon, as I pushed on with my walk, a woman pulled over in a car and asked if I was ok? (that was nice).. she saw it happen.

When I returned, I walked home via a different route, just in case, jumped in my car and went to the owner's house (the dog was back behind the side gate).

He was gobsmacked when I told him the dog had bitten me, apologised profusely and said he would fix the faulty latch on the gate.

I told him that I was ok, but suggested that had it been a young child or someone/anyone else, they would have had no hesitation in putting in a complaint to the council, let alone the possibility of a small child being bitten on the face uh oh

I have owned and bred one type of dog over the last 34 years. They (males in particular) are very protective of their master or mistress. Usually have just the one boss that they are more protective of. Very good when the 7-day Bike Riders show up at the front door and they go ballistic...."Sorry, can't open the door because I can't control my dog."rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

But more often or not, a dog that gets loose is a bit on the scared/defensive side and is trying to protect itself. And usually (only usually) the owners are not aware of any problems. Good on you for letting the owner know so he can take better care of his pet.

A friend of the family had gone through a bad divorce back in the 60s. And she ended up having the 2 Boxer guard dogs trained to protect the family. A couple of times a week, I used to go down and play with the dogs. Bit of rough and tumble but the dogs usually did know the limits about playtime.

But there was a time where they would get riled up a bit much and I did have climb the fence because the male had "lost it" during the playtime. Missed the important bits by inches, the memories of that have scared me for life. Learnt a very important bit in my early life about stirring up anyone.
