rippleinapond: the govt hasnt control over athletes. Its long been a policy that has never been introduced, that all top athletes have their history checked out before they represent a country,so they can keep an eye out for potential cheats. There are drugs noiw that you put under your tongue, and when dissolved into the blood stream they are undetectable.Friend of mine has a heart defect and he was pulled over for a roadside drug test, and they found nothing, two hrs before though he dissolved a heart tablet under his tongue.so just goes to show what the olypic body has to deal with.

The drug tests the coppers do are for the "most common narcotics" as it is difficult to do in the short-term what drugs are in the system. And there is not a system deviced to do a single/simple test of all drugs. Alcohol is alcohol and shows up no matter what you drink. Not drugs.

Did a road safety conference last week where this was one of the topics discussed. To cover all drugs for anything involves very long processes, and sometimes they come up with the wrong conclusion. I do recall an Olympics a few years back where one of our athletes had taken medication prior to the event and it showed up "an illegal substance," it was a caffienated rink that most athletes take.

And swimmers often show up with a 'perfomance-inhancing drug." Ventilin is a common drug for asthmatics and surprising enough, a lot of ashmatics take up swimming to regulate their breathing and have eventually become top athletes.

And I do recall a complaint in cricket because one cricketer used contact lenses and the opposition thought his was "performance enhancing."frustrated

Despite a lot of 'he said, she said' claims made about Lance Armstrong, the fact remains that he has been subjected to hundreds of drug tests and not one of them returned a positive result.
I would want a lot more than the claims for former associates to condemn a man who has passed every single test to which he has been subjected.

Newlife08: Am watching and listening to events unfold in this fiasco with Lance Armstrong, (American Tour de France winner, for the uninitiated) and it is no surprise really is it?

But it makes me so angry that he has got away with it for years, won all those Tour De France comps, got all the glory, money that goes with it, when he vehemently denied, constantly that he was involved in doping??

Trouble is I think I heard something like a third of the winners in the last 10 yrs have been caught out using some kind of Performance Enhancing drugs at some time or other so they would be scratching to find any one to give the "1st place" to?

Sickening

Just confirms for me there is too much money in sport now and people will go to ANY lengths??

Had my rant
....as long as there are drugs........and as long there is sport.....there will be drugs in sport........wonder what the gladiators took.......tiger blood anyone?.......Charlie?

Well it looks like some of Lance's major sponsors have dumped him?

And he has stepped down from his 'cancer charity' LiveStrong so it won't be tainted by his actions? Mmmmm sigh

Wonder if he will apologise or continue to deny it?
confused

At least Armstrong's team partner has been honest enough to admit that he was a drug-cheat before anyone has decided to dump him until he was named. okay, he will suffer from it but it is an admission of his wrong and maybe, only maybe, he does not want to see it continue.

I don't see how any company can continue to link their brand with a cheat?

In effect they are saying "We like this guy, he represents what we are trying to portray as an athlete/person, ......"

We are prepared to pay him a lot of money to draw his fans to our brand - and part with their money ? doh

It's unfortunately a shame for the Tour de France. A so beautiful race...
