in its passports at least, which include a map of whole island

Extracts from the Irish constitution stating the birthright of anyone born north or south of the border to be part of the Irish nation are also prominent throughout the redesign.

Trying to explain to you snowy why am Irish. But you being more British than Finchley, I don't expect you to grasp that...

Throw into the mix you come from the GFA school of thought, everyone knows the GFA is for slow learners.

Holding an Irish passport doesn't make you Irish really. 3 million people outside the State hold Irish passports and most were not born here so they are not really Irish.
Charlie Haughey was selling the passport to rich Arabs years ago and there was a large uptake. Holding it doesn't make them Irish either.

agreed look at the amount of foreign nationals who settled in Ireland over the past few years and were handed Irish passports at a whim..do you want to be a citizen of Ireland? you go to a court..raise your right hand and repeat a piece of text for 30 seconds now you're an irish citizen???? doh

Question for Phx. and anyone else who'd like to answer thumbs up

I'm Irish, very Irish! My opinion is in the question.

In these times, where tech. has made warfare a very different ball game altogether, where a missile could be aimed at Ireland and launched from hundreds if not thousands of miles away, does Ireland need GB or are we perfectly capable of taking care of ourselves, is GB's presence/army bases in N.I. simply their means of defending themselves against attack from their weak flank i.e. Ireland, or can we rely on the EU for defense in such a scenario?

Although still a republican in essence, I have to admit the more that times go on the less I care about a united Ireland. Would I vote to change the constitution to allow for it? Of course, but we're never going to be asked to do so,so why get bogged down in hypotheticals. The war is over and those looking for a United Ireland lost it. As much as I would like there to be a United Ireland in theory, is there really any point in putting an extension onto a house whose foundations are dodgy?

You would be asking people to become part of a state that has been totally mismanaged for the last 90 years and to actually give up their NHS to do so? It's not going to happen buddy. The amount of people who actively support a UI in the North is probably as high as it will ever get. I would hazard a guess it is around 40%, I certainly would dispute Basil McCrea's ridiculous assertion that it would be as low as 25%. However, the longer time goes on, the less people who nominally call themselves republican will care. Peace process era 'republicans' are reasonably removed from the events that may have radicalised their parents or grandparents. They will gradually stop caring especially as they come to realise what a corrupt cesspit they are being asked to throw their lot in. In my dealings with young SF activists in the north in my time in the party I noticed there was a thinly veiled contempt for anything southern. They didn't really want a United Ireland , they wanted the freedom to feel Irish and recognition of same. I deeply believe, the more time passes, the more I start to believe that what people in the North really want is an independent Northern Ireland where they have the freedom to be culturally British or Irish. That is probably not economically viable in the short term so the status quo will continue for now. I still want a united Ireland but I stopped fooling myself that it would happen in the context of an independent Ireland a long time ago. When we (unfortunately) have a federal United States of Europe in maybe the next 50 years, Ireland may be treated as one unit. But until it happens a United Ireland just isn't happening as much as You or I might want it.

Phoenix: Never said it did. I said it (the new passport) states anyone both in any part of the island of Ireland has the right to claim Irish citizenqhip by 'default'..

They have had the right a long time now. You only seeing it now?laugh

People of Irish parents or even an Irish grand parent no matter where they where born have the same right. Doesn't really make em Irish though.

"Ireland reunified"...? Why not call it "Passports design"

or... "Passports include map"

No need to come up with such a controversial title, unless you intended to provoke a negative reaction from the Clover Boys and Clover Girls here.

WittyandWise: It's not a matter of me considering myself Irish, I am Irish.
I would never claim to allow anyone their nationality, I am not that arrogant. It is their nationality.
What gives you the right to dictate people's nationality Snowy, their birth right just like your own.

In your bid to get at pheonix you offend others greatly with some of your comments.

@pheonix, just to clarify, I am not from the same City as yourself.

Now I am out of this thread. Respect for others is greatly lacking here.

Who exactly have I offended?
