Forcedhand: You're giving all the "noble" reasons to justify killing. I'd go a lot further than you and say that most people are capable of marching women and kids into a gas chamber and turning on the gas. I'd say that we'd behave like those in Pol Pot's regime if we found ourselves in similar circumstances. We'd could be the Hutu of Rwanda or the crusaders of the middle ages. Should we really believe that in all the above incidents that a completely unrepresentative sample of humans got together and committed those atrocities ? Don't ask "are you a killer" you should ask are you capable of mass murder or genocide!

I know where you are coming from, I have looked at all the cruelty and what people can become capable of, and often are in small measures already just in their daily lifes...
Some will say it is the system that makes them aso, and this is very possible. But whatever it is, I feel people should look at their inner working and make themselves aware that they very possibily carry the capability.
I remember an interview with a young man who had survived the Kosovo war, and how he in tears described how former neighbours, people who had been friends, polite.. lined up others from the village and began to shoot them. And another interview with someone who had taken part in a massacre in one of the African States, and how they had been bombared with things on their radios, until they come to believe them. It all had led to one group storming a church for the others had been hiding, inclduing women and children, and how they had hacked them to pieces in an insane blood lust. He was crying too.. saying how he could not understand what had made him capable of it...

I don't know, just think people should be aware they might carry it, and that it could be brought forth, and I personally rather explore my inner workings and look closely even at those sights I might not like too much withing myself.

anto_d1975: how do you expect people to test this? what you would say and what you would do in a situation may end up being completely different.

Just play scenarios through your mind and check how you emotionally react to them. It won't give a 100% result, as extreme situations can't be totally predicted, but I do believe it helps at last some to see what could get us frighetend or angry enough.

And yes, people will run away, and they also will not jump into ice cold rivers to safe a little child floating. That's self benefit again/survival. Hold a gun to their head though and tell them to do something, they probably will do it, even if it is something they never thought capable of.

But anyway, I am leaving the forums, but thank you everyone whose posts I read and who gave me food for thought and at times smiles. It was a pleasure meeting ^^

I would like to think that I Would never be a killer...at the risk of sounding...whatever...can't think of the word. In my Opinion, there are very few good reasons to kill...Damn..I dream of people that I want dead...but like I said..never would be a killer,my own life is way too important to me, go with the positive.. I do understand how parents feel if a child has been violated or if a family member has been killed by someone else..but in most cases that I have seen..killing someone else has never been the answer..

In response to: I hope this thread won't be an issue, as it isn't about promoting violence, but rather realising facts about the own self.

Many people when asked this question will no doubt say NO! And they are sort of correct, but same time I believe they are also not.

There lives a killer in each and everyone of us. We are not psychopathes for this, those are a completely different ball game.. but we all I think would agree that in self defense we'd act, and some of us would also act in defense of another.

I know for certain I would not hesitate to defend a child for example, and it would not even have to be my own, and if there'd be a gun in my hand in a moment where I'd come to witness someone just about to kill a child - I'd pull the trigger with no hesitation.
Fortunately those type of situations will usually not arise in our regulated and domesticated society, and thus we tend to not spend much thought on it, but I personally feel we actually should look at this ability within us to kill, to find where our threshold for it lies.

I came to post this due to a discussion in another thread, where I put a controversial scenario forth. It was an uncomfortable scenario, as I believe because it could force us to suddenly 'relate' to the fact that there can be reasons for murder, and that we ourselves deep within carry limits and reasons that could make us react and turn into killers too. I don't think we are aware we shy away from imagining certain scenarios, but I do believe it could be an explanation why we do aso.

Self defense is something most of us will understand and accept as a reason why we could end up killing, but I'd say people carry different levels of what they by their own nature consider 'self defense'. Not as in something that could hold up in a court of law, please do not misunderstand me with this - but within the inner realms of an individual.

For example what if someone threatens our rescources? What if someone threatens our lifestyle? How much of this would we allow, before we'd begin to see it as a case of defending our self interest?

I'd say in a less stable mind, that threshold can be reached faster, and then murder can occure. Under strain, clear thought can end failing and instinct can kick in (panicks being one) which is by NO MEANS an excuse for it happening, as any stable individual should be able to control that self preserving instinct, but I personally believe it can help us to understand ourselves, and also give us tools to deal with this, if we do look at our own thresholds and imagine situation in which it may could be breached.

Not sure this makes clear sense, but I felt it worth to put up for discussion, as well as maybe an excercise for the self - a self that in our modern world rarely gets tested on this, so - how can we truly tell where our limits lie, if they do not get tested, and if we do not even spend time on looking at them?

Interesting and worthwhile post. Haven't got an answer at the moment.

I will point out that the law is the second enemy in a self defense situation. You cant really justify a preemptive strike, unless you think your life is in danger & you had no choice.

there are loads of legal implications, its very involved, especially over here in the UK.
