It would never even enter my head to do one.
My gut feeling is better than any background check.
And I always go with that

I know it may a little cliche, but there are times you have to go with your instinct. Having said that, I believe woman are naturally much better than men at doing this, furthermore, if there is something that is making you question the validity of the person, then maybe it is never going to work the way you want it to. JMO

Twice in the past, I have had dates from sites that led to partner level, then later through conversation with them, find-out that they at one time, had been in prison. No complaints those, both of them were good people to be around. Their crime was drug use related. Both times, when I found-out about it, it did give me pause concerning their character, but my next thought was that everybody needs somebody.

at some points, we will pass this background check stage over someone...no, it is not paranoid.... rather normal than being reckless...

Background checks? Nope, never even given a thought to having one done.
If you have a feeling something isn't right, either confront them about it, or walk away. Best to know before you continue, and if they give a plausible reason.

I personally go with instinct. I as well ask questions. A background check is pretty extreme. Just think about if you are wrong and now you have to face him and take responsibility for your actions. Lets be honest here, you are digging into his stuff to see how honest he is. If you do this check then you have to step up to the honesty plate as well. I firmly believe you can not have a successful future by digging in the past.
BUT your instincts, that is another story. Online dating is a dangerous game when it comes to the matters of the heart. You must always lead with your head and use common sense. The flags will pop up. The questions will be obvious and his answers should be clear. If they are not clear or your questions are side stepped and avoided I personally would move on.
