So just wondering what everyone's 'thing' for filling in their spare time is. (Apart from posting here that is!) I have a fairly busy life with working nearly full time and bringing up a gang of kids near single-handedly (have an au pair helping out at the mo but shes gone at end of the month then its back to just me) and Ive noticed that since my ex left Ive lost touch with most of my friends and dropped any hobbies I ever had due to lack of time. Which is annoying me lately as I feel like I have nothing in my life that is just for me. Would like to pick up a new hobby or interest but dont really know what would suit! All I do at the moment is watch movies and read books, and then hang out with the kids and stuff......its not helping me meet people either. I joined this thing a few months back to try that but honestly I dont even have the time for this either ( I do browse it every so often but never feel I have much to add to the conversations going on - I'm amazed how you all keep the banter going so regularly!!) So Im just wondering, out of curiousity, what kind of stuff people do? Im not mad into sports to be honest, not the competitive type, though I do like hill walking and orienteering and all that. Well, I used to years ago! Dont know how youd get into something like that now....
Probably wont help me much but might get some inspiration from you guys, you never know! Ta!

Painting is good. Something else I used to do a long time ago. Though I was more of a writer. Wrote a couple of half-arsed 'novels' about 12 years ago then gave up on them.....might be worth digging them out and having a go again maybe.

Archery would be great, tried that once and loved it. Also did a bit of horseriding before. I reckon these are all probably 'expensive' passtimes though. I suppose they all are really, once you step outside the home.

Bellydancing - think I'll pass on that one though! Would not be a pretty sight!!!!:)

snowlynx: I wasn't into it much really either but once you start your view changes and there's a lot of satisfaction to be got from watching something you've planted grow.
Also it's at home so you don't need to travel to do it.

You could be on to something there.....might have to have a think about that. Bit of music blasting on the ipod while working away ...could be fun. I'd get all of two minutes into it before the kids are calling me for something though!!

haha..see you are creative,

i also forgot..buy a guitar and self teach yourself using youtube..

actually a writers course would be a good way to meet some peeps.. and photography would give you some treasured snaps of your children...so its an investment.

gotta get my butt to bed...7am rolls around too quick thesedays..

Good thread Dirk and coming from the same neck of the woods as yourself there are great places to see in our Hood so to speak. Kids love the getting out on the curragh with a kite or a ball thing, and then there is the National stud and Japanese gardens. Coillte have some fabulous forest walks in Kildare, Wicklow, Laois Dublin area and we are only a short spin from the beaches on the coast. I like day trips, camping outdoors kind of hobbies and GAA plays a major role in my life.

I suppose you should explore and decide what you really want to do yourself, maybe the type of books you like to read could open avenues, for example if you like history then contact a group into history or volunteer for some local projects that you find interesting.

Anyway, best of luck and you should really start supporting the lilies, come on, You are a Kildare man. thumbs up

Well you said you like hill walking and that so why don't you try and get in touch with people that like same,

I admire you working full time and bringing up your kids on your own and I'd say not Easey getting time for yourself, I got into drama a few years ago then I had enough of that ,,I like swimming and going back in few weeks,,even just walking is good and I bring my mams dog out,,I meet up with people to say helo,..yes try get in contact with people who go hill walking and that and maybe you could just start off Easey,.thumbs up

Would you consider joining a Men's Shed? There would be one within travelling distance They can be great.

You should look into the poetry section here on CS. It would get your mind working and being creative. They are a nice encouraging bunch in there too.

Volunteer to do some dog-walking at a local animal rescue. You would be doing some good, plus getting exercise, plus meeting other dog walkers also.
