Vertigo is a relatively common ailment, Sometimes crystals form in the middle ear known as canaliths, these can dislodge and cause symptoms of vertigo. GPs and or physiotherapists can do what is known as the canalith repositioning manoeuvre or epley manoeuvre. this helps to reposition the crystals in the middle ear and alleviate the symptoms. they might prescribe an anti emetic such as stemetil to help with the feelings of nausea that often accompanies vertigo. I've had it and had the manoeuvre performed and it works a treat.wine

The doctor diagnoses it primarily based on the history and symptoms presented by the patient, ie dizziness on sitting from the laying position, spinning sensation, loss of balance ect. Also the doc might get you to lay down for a couple of minutes then get you to rapidly sit up and observe your eye movents, in vertigo they'll involuntarily rapidly move from side to side (nystagmus) the test is called the Dix-Hallpike test.

Ah right, thanks conversing

I don't get that dizzy/spinning thing, I wonder if my experiences are some kind of panic attack..

Could be any number of things, commonly people with low blood pressure suffer bouts of dizziness when they go from a laying or sitting position to standing. If you have any concerns a trip to your gp might be in order. It's been a while since I was in the game so there might be new research or treatments available.thumbs up

From 1971-73 I worked (at times) on the construction of the NSW Law Courts, walking on the steel beams all the way to the top, 300 feet above the roadway. No safety harnesses in those days.

Then we had a job setting out marked points on the old 23 storey AMP building at Circular Quay as the small tiles were falling off and they were going to put an overlay on. We went up the outside of the building in something like a window washers cradle. Everytime we leant against the building to mark and measure a spot, the cradle would swing out from the building. I quit that job that day.

To this day, I still do not like walking over suspended walkways or bridges were I can see down. I call it panic attack even though I know that bridges are very well designed. Not that many fall down.....and they usually only do it once.

Nowadays I wear glasses for reading. If I get up and walk with them on for any reasonable distance, I do suffer from vertigo or similar.

I am glad I am not the only one.
I have not flown for over 20 years and have a problem with ladders.
I don't go up in high buildings, or near cliff edges.
