Guys are into 50/50 when it comes to dating, when did that new rule begin- so that you as a lady feel obligated to keep them happy. Being 50/50 doesn't have to mean running after a guy.
It just means just that - 50/50. Women work and earn, are educated, have their own money, so we don't expect the man to do and pay for everything.
Use free software like Viber/Skype/Whatsapp etc., to reduce phone bills if money is tight. Nobody, not even men, have a limitless budget.

You dodged a bullet and you don't even know it. This is a common trait of a control freak. The next thing he would have done if you oblidged him by calling would be to ask you to help him out with a little money probably because his equipment was siezed by the authorities and he needs the money to get them back so he can earn the money to pay you back. Of course his credit card for some unknown reason doesn't seem to work in S.A. Oh and his daughter needs emergency medical care too and because he's a widower (his wife died in a horrible car crash)
