Used to be a time when you could have chickens and cows in your back yard but those times are far gone. If I had the opportunity to be a Farmer, I would prefer to have just a Hobby Farm and would raise enough livestock and grow enough produce to satisfy my own needs.wave

wave You're right, those were the good old days. Where I live, a neighbor of mine used to have a few geese but not anymore. Somewhere around my neighborhood there is a rooster but that's about it.

If I had a farm one of my favorite animals to have would be a Llama. They're adorable.
As far as produce, tomatoes, green chile, jalapenos, and cilantro would be at the top of my list because having fresh, homemade salsa in the refrigerator is a must!yay

My dream is to own a small farm and become a Sunday farmer. Half a dozen chickens and homing pigeons, a dog, a cat, a horse or two, a couple of (goats, sheep, cows) and who knows.

Been there, done that. It was the best job ever for me, working with dairy cows, being your own boss - but the work load was just too much and prices are getting lower and lower. I will always keep an interest and would like to continue working in that area (as I'm doing now), but I wouldn't go back to full-time farming. I really do appreciate stuff like holidays and weekends off and working week of less than 80 hours.

A dog, cat and if I didn't know what to do with my time and money, one of the big, sporty pony's again (I don't like warm bloods).

Onlyguy,

Yep, that is the dream of a whole lot of people where I live.

They come down from the city and buy these small lifestyle blocks.

Unfortunately some(note, some) of these people have been predominately urban dwellers all their lives and don't know a whole lot about animals and pasture.

It pays to acquire some knowledge before taking that type of lifestyle on.

I had a small farm for a few years. Started out with pigs, they were a little labor intensive but very profitable. Then I switched over to Beef cows. You don't make anywhere near the money from beef cows but they pretty much take care of themselves. I wouldn't own a horse if it was offered for free. They are useless. Same reason I wouldn't want a dog. Unless you have a lot of land and all the equipment needed it would be a losing proposition to grow crops like corn or wheat etc. Farming isn't as easy as people think and you're at the mercy of mother nature.
If I ever got back into the farm life I would raise nothing but pigs and a medium flock of laying hens.

There was a guy in the area where I had my farm who had a milk cow, A Jersey I think. He was poor as dirt. Had a couple of kids running around in worn out hand me down clothes. If you brought your own plastic milk jugs he would sell you a gallon of milk right from the cow for $1.25. He would milk the cow while you stood there and watched. It was kinda sad, his little piece of land was real hilly and rocky, not much good for anything.

I practically grew up on a farm. I know how it runs, etc.

I wouldn't think I want to be a farmer, at least not dependant on the farm incomes.

It’s too much of bureaucracy and farm inspections in the EU!

I’ve been in the agricultural field for most of my life and value my time, I want to be able to travel for instance!

This thread reminds me of this, written in 1942. World war 2 was raging when this poem was written but life goes on.

It's easy to say that you would like to live on a farm but would you be willing to kill the livestock for human consumption?
