I think it's probably because many women around 50 are in the prime of their life, I know I was
I wasn't remotely interested in men older than me as I found most were set in their ways, predominantly boring and looking for someone to look after them.
Younger men however were interesting, full of life and vigour and spontaneous, like myself.
