I remember a while back, the school I go to put on a dance they called a prom. Personally, I thought it was weird. I've never heard of going to the prom in college. Has anybody else heard of this?

I think it was done decades ago, but went the way of the kerosene lamp, poodle skirts, and 'Cotillions". Also, in the 30's, 40's, and probably into the 1950's it was quite common for college students to gather around the fireplace at a favorite professors cottage; equally as common for college professors to lease or own a house on or near the college campus. I seriously doubt that you find students being guests at instructors' homes in this day and age.

Oh, well, I want to say this was maybe a year or two ago. Might've been a little longer, I don't remember. This was the first time I had ever heard of a college prom.

I have no idea about this in the USA but when I was at uni, it was common to visit some Profs home, where we had some hilarious discussions and sometimes really aggressive ones too Towards graduation we would frequent more often, to get ideas or have our work reviewed. Now, as I work in China, I have carried on that tradition, and most weekends my apartment has many students visiting, and we have impromptu discussions, talks even watching a western film and then talk about it afterwards.
I think it sad that this no longer happens, I think I learnt more in those late fun evenings than 6 years of hard study lol

Here, it would be unusual for undergrads to visit a lecturer's home.

PhD students, yes, this would happen.
I am not sure just how 'universal' this may be, but I will say that an observation of mine in college (medical technology), was that Physicians' Assistants, Registered Nurses, and Psychology Major students were all treated with more respect than Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and X-ray Technicians. Kind of an "Officers Club" mentality.
