annaroach: I just can't believe that it is accepted to be late for a date,, expected even, just
because it is a first date,, without any reason.

Also i don't understand people who are using their phones while in company.

All that sort of thing is just bad manners!!

Does anyone agree?

It is not acceptable to be late for anything: date, work, friend meeting, etc...or any other thing laugh

Phone being used... it depends....because of work, family etc..

cool

Politeness and social manners used to be taught in British schools, I remember being taught how to shake hands correctly, how to stand when woman leaves a table, to open a door and pull back a chair for a lady. Etc.Etc.

Sadly with advent of "equality" many of the "old fashioned" social graces are no longer seen as such and so got pushed aside, but in doing so, many of the other social manners got washed down the sink too.

Modern society says a person must earn respect before being respected, whereas I was taught to always show respect until that person does something that reduces respect.

annaroach: Should people follow their own instincts,OR
Should they yield to social conventions/code of behaviour

Isn't it all about basic good manners, not an uptight way to live

Shouldn't we think of other peoples feelings, after all
it's not all about us.
Personally i like to treat others as i would like to be treated myself.

This covers a vast area of social behaviour.

I guess I get a tad irritated when I see one person pronouncing upon what others SHOULD / SHOULD NOT do ...

If it's a huge big deal that the dude turns up late, then why would you wait?

Or is that YOUR position that one must yield to social conventions ?

Maybe 40 years such conventions were the norm ... today, well, we've all seen the decline in ... pretty much all behaviour really!

I dislike lateness in myself or others, but one should be flexible. Traffic or other unexpected issues mean that you can allow 5 to 10 minutes. However, if they have your number, then there's no real excuse for not informing you.

Regarding using mobiles; I train people and tell them that unless their great-great-great-great-great grandmother is ill, mobiles are banned during training.

Ive also been in social situations where the rules is - the first person to check their phone, pays for the coffees/meal/etc.

look at first page of this thread.

several posts it says.

"this post is removed by moderator"

I think anyone should be allowed to remove post and even block people on their own thread.

especially if they tell obvious lies and flood to room with nonsense.

so I am not upset if you did remove post. was just wondering why.
