rizlared: No I didn't forget, that was not true in the 1950-60s, the rich farmers employed native Africans, built homes, schools, hospitals for the local people. Had the white immigrants never entered Rhodesia, the majority of the indigenous population would have had a far harder life, similar to the one they eventually got after Mugabe took control.

I was born and brought up in Kenya, my father employed over 20 native Africans in the small company he ran, he also provided financial aid, scholarships for local school children to enter universities.

To suggest that all that was done by the British in African countries was bad, is to admit an outstanding level of ignorance. Maybe some of the ideology was misplaced and certainly some whites mistreated local people, but you cannot tar all with the same brush.

History has shown that those African countries run by the British, became prosperous and raised the level of life for the mainstream population, history also shows that since those same countries became independent, they have fallen backwards and are now struggling to survive. Thankfully China has now taken on some responsibilities and is helping to rebuild some African countries.

Some people hate the beautiful diversity of human development and want to make all nature as grey as themselves. It is their deep instinct. But in Africa this leads to nothing but trouble.

rizlared: Indeed, I still have wonderful memories from my childhood, especially the noise of the falls and the rainbows created by the spray rising up.
On my father's lounge wall there is a shield made from zebra hide and short spear, given to him by a tribal elder for some help he did, it is a very proud memento and one that one day I will have the privilege to hang on my wall.

Beautiful items they are. I have the shield and short jabbing spear given to me from a Matabele Chief . We met during operations near Mt. Darwin in which he and members of the Selous Scouts took part. His tribe made up the bulk of the Scouts in their fight against Mugabe. Going through immigration I listed the shield and spears etc. simply as 'souvenirs'. No problems in bringing all the items home . Wonderful people the Matabele, I just hope they found good homes in SA when all the Scouts left Rhodesia as they all had death warrants on their heads including all the European officers. At Beit Bridge when they crossed, many of the SA special forces there cheered for them and gave them a hearty welcome...yet it was such a sad day to see the end of Rhodesia and all of it's unrealized potential. That infamy rests squarely on the Brits and that venomous Kissinger creature of the US. Perhaps one day we'll know what they had threatened South Africa with if they had tried to save Rhodesia by force as many wanted...

chris27292729: You forgot to mention, that in the then Phodesia, rich were the white farmers,
and poor the rest of the black population.

Left wing, liberal claptrap!

When Rhodesia was started in 1890 the country was entirely bush with not a single brick structure and a total black population of about 700 000..
White farmers cleared the land, planted crops and imported livestock as well as teaching modern farming methods to the local population and providing employment, schools and medications.
Much of the land was crippled by endemic diseases like malaria, bilharzia, sleeping sickness and the farmers worked in these areas too.

When Mugabe and his killers took over in the 1980s they inherited what was known as the breadbasket of Africa and the population had increased to about 9 million with dramatically increased life expectancy rates and reduced child mortality. Mugabe's mob has contributed significantly to reversing those gains.

Most of the older black population who remember the pre-Mugabe days will admit that things were better then.

I might add that my roots there go back to a time when one of the towns was named after my mother's side of the family so I think I am able to give an honest view.

It's a sad fact that most people outside of Africa know and understand very little about the countries in that continent. The only news every published was always the bad news, never the good things that Europeans did when they first arrived.
In my opinion, the biggest mistake the white immigrates did was to create borders, something native Africans never understood or even believed, and that created tensions and increased tribal wars.
But we can all be clever with hindsight, overall countries benefitted from western influences, and then discarded that to become rich and powerful, Mugabe is a prime example. Armin is another. In fact, almost every leader that took control after gaining independence.

I agree with you,, people around the world know very little about the truth, how it was really in Rhodesia or in South Africa..

What town was named after your mother side of the family? ..

I hope Zimbabwe will become more friendly towards white people.. Would ve like to travel to Matopo hills area.. never been in that part of the country.

I am !!! but we are more civialised these days and eating each other happens in maybe tribes we have not found.doh

People seem to always live in the past---past mistakes---past thinking we can never move forward if we keep going on about past mistakes. Some people will never forget though and perpetuate past hatreds.

I just hope through a few generations things can move forward to happier times for everyone.

Hartley. Named after Henry Hartley, an early hunter and explorer. The settlement of Hartley was originally located in the Hartley Hills 34 kilometres (21 mi) east of where the town is located today. White settlers flocked to the area after gold was discovered and the Butterfly and Giant Mines were both established nearby. The settlement was moved to its present location in 1899. In 1901 the railway reached Hartley, which was proclaimed a village in 1903 and a town in 1942. A Town Council was established in 1968 and in 1974 Hartley was granted municipality status.

Here are some photos from Rhodesia's better days..before we lost..Many people have no idea just how large Rhodesia is: 3 times the size of England that had a European population about the size of Oxford, England.
