It feels like ever since news broke last autumn of Prince Harry’s relationship with Suits star Meghan Markle, rumours of an engagement have been bubbling along, hitting fever pitch late last week when British bookmakers suspended betting on the impending announcement. Earlier this morning, Clarence House confirmed what we’ve suspected for a really (really) long time: a royal wedding will take place in Spring 2018.

Per the official announcement, ‘further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.’ While we’ll doubtless know little about the couple’s guest list until the day itself (will Meghan return the favour and invite Serena Williams along for the ride?), it remains unclear whether Harry’s grandmother will be attending the ceremony.

So, why might the Queen be forced to skip her grandson’s wedding? As Queen of England, Elizabeth II is also the Head of the Church of England, Defender of the Faith or fidei defensatrix to give her the correct Latin title (but if you’re up-to-date on The Crown, you’ll know this already…) So, she stands for the Church, its values and – by extension – its views on divorce. Meghan’s previous marriage (to TV producer Trevor Engelson, whom she divorced in 2013) makes things rather more complicated. To use another Crown allusion, think back to Wallis Simpson and the Duke of Windsor, or Princess Margaret and Peter Townsend: these days, the royals are arguably more liberal in their attitudes, but the Queen still takes her duty as Defender of the Faith very seriously.

Who is Meghan Markle and who are her parents?
The 36-year-old star was born and raised in California but until recently lived in Toronto, Canada, where the TV show Suits is filmed.

When she was little, Meghan spent a lot of time on the set of US TV show Married... with Children because her dad was a photography director on it.

Meghan was "discovered" at a party but while her career was starting out she worked as a freelance calligrapher.

Meghan's mother, Doria Radlan, is a yoga instructor and social worker. Her father, Thomas W Markle, won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction for a Drama Series.

Doria is African-American, while Meghan's father is Dutch-Irish, and the family were victims of racial abuse when Meghan was younger.

Henry VIII was divorced and was King of England
David married simpson, so Harry can marry whomsoever he wishes
Harry is third in line for the throne, therefore unlikely to ever be king, Especially if William has children. As to whether the Queen will attend, there is no reason for her not to, unless illness occurs, the same as for his father the Prince of Wales, but some media love to create negative speculation, it sells!
The Royal family moves with the times, unlike some people who think the laws of a bygone era should be valid in the 21st century.

Charles though next in line to the throne. May not be chosen. There is a good chance it will be Prince William.
If Charles is chosen, his wife Camilla will not be queen, because Charles divorced his first wife (and that would of been her title). The next Queen (no matter what) is Kate Middleton.

This is the first I heard that the Queen can not attend Prince Harry's wedding. I have to look into that & get links. But I certainly believe you.

Yes, Charles can still be King and Camilla either remains (honorary) Duchess or will be referred to as "Royal Consort"

I wish them all the happiness and many babies, it has nothing to do with them being human.
Harry has even been saying that he would leave the royals but not his woman. thumbs up

By who ? When the Queen is dead, the crown then passing on to the next in line.

You can see it in the news, spin doctors are trying to increase Charles' public image.

Although public opinion is against him due to his shenanigans, and with public opinion still with Princess Di and her tragic end.

This was Eltons Johns tribute to Princess Di at her Funeral.

They all live in a gilded cage and a gilded cage is still a cage. Poked fun at like a zoo animal.

I read that too. But not sure I believe it. Because Prince Harry as King? I don't think William will do that to us rolling on the floor laughing
The question would then be (from the public), would his wife be Queen? I don't see how. She was not royalty married in like Lady Di turned into Princess Diana. Markel's title is honorary and yes.. the divorce issue again. She probably would be made (honorary) Duchess

QE2 can make the decision before death (from what I read). If she is concerned at all about traditions and the church, she won't choose Prince Charles.

Yes, beautiful song. But I never understood why he did that. It was written for Marilyn Monroe and he changed a few words

Princess Diana's HRH title and royal status was taken away from her once decree absolute (divorce) was finalised.

If she was allowed to keep HRH (Her Royal Highness) she would have been given full royal bodyguard protection - which may have saved her.moping

I don't think she will attend. No matter what people think of her or her family, she has kept to royal protocol and traditions.
If she breaks that now.. she will destroy her own legacy

True it might of saved her.
But I agree that her title should be removed. Her identity and status changed.
This has happened in other countries as well with divorce. Especially with Countesses
