From what I have heard, they compile lists of phone numbers, emails, etc and sell them. Once someone has an email address from a 'Profile responder' they can hack into it and try to obtain personal information - bank accounts, credit card passwords, etc. I know because I was 'hit' last year. Soon after going 'off-site' with this woman, I was asked for money as she was 'stranded in Europe'. When I refused, my email address was suddenly unavailable to me. Fortunately, that address was not used for anything but light business contacts and I was able to get control back and not use it again.
