During my teaching career, we also had some conversation topics such as smoking, drinking, etc. and, like you pointed out, about the death penalty...
And the class was divided into two groups with each side debating pros or cons... but, from the other side perspective, without judgment nor emotions involved, and staying "detached" from the outcome.
This was very interesting indeed!
But... how many have those skills nowadays?

i have not seen many good debates on CS forums except ChesneyChrist aming himselfs. this is a place for amusement. Regardless, Unlike the USA government where they have long drawn speeches which are nothing more than bloviations with little response on the floor, the British are beautiful debaters in Parliament.
