A Debate is a process that involves formal discussion on a particular topic where opposing arguments are put forward to argue for opposing viewpoints.

The purpose of a debate is to express yourself and speak your heart out on a given topic. And you will get the opposition in your reasoning. The art of debating teaches you to prove your point, even if you get the contradiction. It tests your reasoning.

Some people say they like a “good debate”.... but... do they really?

Or... they are just seeking out people to agree with them?

Is it positive or negative?

Discuss to your heart´s content.
Here is a line from the book, "The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin":
While sometimes bowing to the emerging romantic cult of sincerity, he remained firmly rooted in the traditional eighteenth-century world of restraining one's inner desires and feelings in order to be civil and get along.

I find the "romantic cult" to be very prevalent in today's society. People's claim to be "open minded", yet ignoring the differences that make each of us unique, is very hypocritical. It has become a jargon to mean that they accept any ideals and turn a blind eye to anything that defines a group.

"I am a great lover of these processes of division and generalizations.... And if I find any man who is able to see unity and plurality in nature, him I follow, and walk in his step as if he were a god" (Socrates).

daniela777: Hello Red..

Yes..you're right...your thoughts and opinions on a particular topic could change in the middle of the debate?

But...it is not always accepted because you've already been "judged" right from the onset and most people won't see...or will ignore any other comments you make somewhere along the line.
Doesn't matter to me they can judge away, I know me grin and that's all that matters. Pinch of salt comes to mind laugh teddybear

I know...that's my way of thinking too.

There are more important things in life than what's being said behind a keyboard...From some distance away...from people we'll probably never meet anyway.

Arguing (or, if you prefer, debating) is a bit like the play-fighting that young cats do. It is good practice for the real world. It is also a bit like the play-fighting games humans play (e.g. boxing, wrestling, fencing, rugby, etc). But with brains instead of with fists or hands or legs.

Accordingly, it is overwhelmingly positive, beneficial, and good for our (mental) health.

Good for the health ?
I suppose it produces adrenaline..dopamine..and all the good hormones?

But it can also be stressful if too much arguing is going on?

it should be about taking a subject and picking a side and then posting none emotional points to back up that side and visa versa.....the most interesting debate I had was to debate the death penalty on the opposite of what I believe....that taught me how to debate without emotion which worked well for being a paralegal....the point is to argue the case and its merits not the person or via emotion.....wave

Here's my take on the hormone issue -
When debating, certain hormones are released. Indeed, the adrenaline and its cohorts help the mind to think faster and clearer.

However, when negative emotions, such as fear, anger, aggression, etc, enter, the mind does not produce rational thoughts. Stress does that to male and female alike.

I am led to believe that when a person knows that they are wrong and choose to stubbornly maintain their position, then an internal dissonance develops. This leads to further mounting of emotion and irrational thoughts and behaviors. They know they are wrong and refuse to admit it.

A person who knows they are right rarely loses their temper or succumbs to emotional outbursts.

Having said that, I can already hear the steam mounting inside people who want to argue against what I have said.

True debate is neither positive or negative, it is a argument of a topic from different sides. What people choose to do with the result of the debate is what can be good or evil.

Excellent M4! thumbs up

During my teaching career, we also had some conversation topics such as smoking, drinking, etc. and, like you pointed out, about the death penalty...
And the class was divided into two groups with each side debating pros or cons... but, from the other side perspective, without judgment nor emotions involved, and staying "detached" from the outcome.

This was very interesting indeed!

But... how many have those skills nowadays? dunno

Good morning Kay dunno

I have just read your comment and agree entirely with what you said. thumbs up

Exactly! I put this down as an Ego issue.uh oh

Also, as I wrote in one of my blogs: "Being happy, or right?"

A person who knows they are right rarely loses their temper or succumbs to emotional outbursts.
True! It even becomes laughable at times.

Having said that, I can already hear the steam mounting inside people who want to argue against what I have said.

Probably but... I doubt if they will comment on this thread, but create their own thread instead?

Hi Track wave

You´re right! thumbs up

The important thing in a debate is to stay detached from the outcome.

Debates have sparked revolutions and have sparked riots. It all depends on who ears listens to them.
