OnlyLiveTwice: Is online dating all about looks?

In other words, is online dating just like dating in RL?
I've never dated online so I don't know if it's the same thing but I prefer real life dating, even though I haven't dated in years.laugh

My intention was to explore the psychology and dynamics of attraction. It's mostly visual, that's the hook. But as time passes, that becomes less important and other dynamics take over - body, voice, behaviour, conversation, personality etc. But online, all you have to work with is a photo....it's pretty superficial, innit?

daniela777: In the virtual world I don't really care what they look like.
I go for the written word and the personality...and the brain!

I used to communicate with someone here for a few months ...without a pic...and he rather impressed me with his words.

Then...we decided to exchange pics and even Skype. Although I wasn't attracted by his looks...I could see beyond that and it didn't really bother me.
I thought I'd bring my comment up again...for "phychological" purposes.

As I said.. I don't need a photo to correspond with someone on a deep level.
I can usually make a good assessment of the person from the written word..and also by reading between the lines (intuition?)

In fact..a picture would be a distraction.

Now...there are times when I need a photo when I do some distance healing (humans or animals)..so that I can connect with their energy.

YES. It IS! But men tend to be more "visual" than women.

Women tend to have their other senses more developed..especially the 6th.

Take my profile for example..
How many men have asked me for better and clearer photos when I stated that I wasn't interested in a relationship??? roll eyes

They say they want to be pen pals and yet they're not happy with the photo!! roll eyes
I don't complain about theirs and I don't care if they're faceless or not.

I think it is easier to be conned by someone online because there is no real life interaction but with that said, being conned in real life is also a reality and some con's are just as good online or off unfortunately.

Hmmmm.....I love playing devil's advocate, so please bear with me. You can dialogue with someone online, per Skype, per Whatsapp all you want, but you'll never really know a person until you have spent time with them. In the dating world we often present our best side to interested parties, and why not? But you can't tell what a person is like just by talking to them long-distance. This is why so many online relationships fail, because when the couple do meet, everything can change in an instant. Face-to-face, you can sense chemistry, or wether there is none. It's a combination of all the aspects of that person. Online 90% is missing.

Btw, the title of this thread is not meant to be self-centred. It was a comment on the whole paradigm of online dating, and social media in general - which is 'Look at me!' Social media has turned us as a society into a chronically self-obsessed culture. Don'tcha tink?

I quite agree but...
Those online long distance ones I never have the intention of meeting them.
It's just a penpal "friendship".

If I intended to meet someone up close ...there would have to be some phone calls and Skype talks and they would also have to live somewhere near.

yes it is, I am also on another site, where you get to see each others picture after chatting for a while, lot of people immediately end the conversation when they see my pics. And they are decent pics.

Personality is hugely attractive. Personally a photo does not a lot for me - it gives me an idea about if someone looks after themselves or not. I think it is easier to disregards someone because of looks from a photo than chatting in RL and liking someone's personality.

On the other hand - you can photo shop a photo or pick a flattering one, won't work in RL. laugh
