The sad thing is, a lot of this could have been avoided...

"It is incredible to me that the UK is willing to throw away some £220 billion and rising on Trident against a war scenario nobody can sensibly define, but was not willing to spend a few million on holding stock of protective clothing for the NHS against the much more likely contingency of a pandemic. What does that say about our society?"

From the same article....

"Its arecognised pattern for dictatorship to commence with emergency measures designed to combat a threat. Those emergency measures then become normalised and people exercising arbitrary power find it addictive. A new threat is then found to justify the continuation

It is by no means clear to me that it is a rational response to covid-19 to tear up all of the civil liberties which were won by the people against authority through centuries of struggle, and for which people died. To say that is not to minimise the threat of covid-19. It is also worth pointing out that a coronavirus pandemic was a widely foreseen eventuality. People keep sending me links to various TV shows or movies based on a coronavirus pandemic, generally claiming this proves it is a man-made event. No, that just proves it is a widely foreseen event. Which it is.

The lack of contingency preparedness is completely indefensible. It is partly a result of the stupidity of Tory austerity that has the NHS permanently operating at 100% capacity with no contingency, and partly the result of the crazed just-in time thinking that permeates management in all spheres and eliminates the holding of stock."

I for one, hopes that Boris gets better, as I wouldn't wish this horrendous virus upon anyone. I just think "what if it was a member of my family"...

Read this today....and from a few sources. Whatever next?

A tiger at the Bronx zoo has tested positive for the new coronavirus, in what is believed to be the first known infection in an animal in the US or a tiger anywhere, federal officials and the zoo said on Sunday.

The four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia – and six other tigers and lions that have also fallen ill – are believed to have been infected by a zoo employee who wasn’t yet showing symptoms, the zoo said. The first animal started showing symptoms on 27 March, and all were doing well and expected to recover, said the zoo, which has been closed to the public since 16 March amid the outbreak.

Stay safe.....

Unfortunately you will always find people who think it's smart to make caustic remarks about others. It actually says a lot about their character .

This virus isn't about politics it's about people or it should be.

Stay safe.hug

bodleing2: Its noticeable how well South Korea have managed the situation. They had come through the sars epidemic and learned the lesson of being prepared for the next one.
Their main strategy was test, test, test, backed up with the technology through mobile phone apps to ensure everyone ( no exceptions) who tested positive remained isolated.
It was a strategy that worked well. Unfortunately even if the UK wanted to follow their example we were woefully short of the equipment required to do so. That, along with dragging our heels to close schools and initiate a meaningful lock down has proved to be a grave mistake and quite likely caused many more deaths than otherwise might have been the case.
As people may be aware that Spain isn't a "rich country". We have suffered "heavily" from this virus but having been on a strict lock down for over 3 weeks and will continue to do so up until 26th April. we are now "hopefully" seeing a bit of light through the end of the tunnel. Our death rates have now been going down at a daily rate . I don't have a mask but I wrap a scarf (doubled up) around my nose and mouth when I "Need" to go out for my essential shopping, which is about once every 9 days as I live on my own and don't have a car so I have to walk but I have my little pink shopping trolley to bring my shopping home. It's only 1 person in a car here so my friends can't take me anyway.

I'm not trying to be negative but I read up a lot, every day re this virus and deaths/ new cases and recoveries as I think that people need to be aware of what's actually going on around the world. I'm British and I see posts on FB from my friends etc.. from the Uk where people are just "flaunting" the "not so strict lock down"
I feel really sorry for my daughter and her partner who are "key workers" she has taken 2 weeks holiday and he will take 2 weeks holiday after her, as she has a son aged 10 and a daughter who is autistic aged 13 ( goes to a special school). Her son will have to go to school ( but only for parents that are key workers) so only about 12 pupils in the school but still very worrying. My daughter and her partner will be allowed to go home every half hour (separately) to check up on Summer, my daughters daughter. I should have got on a bloody plane over there but we were put on "lock down" within 6 hours.

As for SARS. The scientists were working on a vaccine for it but it faded out before it was accomplished so they stopped and starting working on other viruses/diseases.

Google is better than reading a book if you go through lots of "sources" and you get to use your fingers on a keyboard if you're on a computer. Give me a computer any day. I'm a bit "old school"

grin

Stay safe teddybear

Boris Johnson was taken to intensive care on Monday night after his coronavirus symptoms worsened.

The news that the head of the UK government needed to go to critical care left the nation reeling, with messages supporting the prime minister being posted by politicians of all backgrounds online.

But is has led to questions about how bad Johnson’s condition is and what will happen to the government and its response to the coronavirus crisis while he receives treatment.
Why was the prime minister moved to the intensive care ward?

Downing Street said Johnson’s condition “worsened” on Monday afternoon and he was moved to intensive care at St Thomas’ Hospital on the advice of his medical team.

“The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication,” the spokesman said.

Boris Johnson is “responding to treatment” for his coronavirus symptoms, Downing Street has said.

The prime minister has now spent two nights in intensive care in St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

Providing an update on his condition on Wednesday afternoon, the PM’s spokesperson said: “The prime minister remains clinically stable and is responding to treatment.

“He continues to be cared for in the intensive care unit at St Thomas’ Hospital.”

The spokesperson added that Johnson remained “in good spirits” and was “receiving standard oxygen treatment and is breathing without any other assistance”.

Foreign secretary Dominic Raab, who is standing in for the PM where necessary, yesterday said he was “confident” Johnson would pull through and that the prime minister was a “fighter”.

Downing Street confirmed today Johnson is no longer working and Raab had been deputising for the PM since Monday evening.

The spokesman refused to comment on claims in The Times that Johnson’s high temperature had gone down.

“You know my view on anonymous sources who speculate on the condition of people in intensive care,” he said.

Johnson’s top aide Dominic Cummings, who has been self isolating with coronavirus symptoms, “has been in contact with No.10 but he’s not working inside the building”.

Asked whether Larry, the Downing Street cat, was being kept indoors after the British Veterinary Association said felines from self isolating households should not be allowed outside as a precaution, the spokesperson said: “Larry is absolutely fine, I’ve seen him myself this morning, he’s going about his business in the usual way.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson confirmed that the current lockdown will be reviewed by the government “on or around” the three-week deadline on Monday. It is widely expected to be extended.

“We set out that we would make further announcements in three weeks and there is no change to that,” the spokesperson said. “There is no change at all to the timeline.”
