As the phrase itself says "down-to-earth" to me means grounded, realistic, unpretencious, discerning and accepting of all (good and bad) reality as it is in regard to relationships and to life in general. Being able to make healthy, understanding and realistic judgements and expectations about himself, other people and situations.

Simple and sincere, and also a bit blinkered. The earth would still be known as the centre of the universe if it was left to the down to earth. A man with vision would be it's other half.

My perception of down to earth in other people (I cannot be considered one of them) ...
Someone who only believes in what can be seen and touched ...
Someone who "plays it safe" and takes no chances ...
Someone probably dependable but lacks spontaneity...
