Harbottle: If this were a blog, I would delete that comment, and then you would be sorry, pat.
i didn't know we can delete posts made in cs blogs. seems like a ridiculous tool which will only lead to undercurrents of despair, turmoil and retaliation if not possibly suicide. no one should have that power. i agree a op should have there right to deny any other posters comments to a blog but the op should not have selective cancel powers on a dating site forum or blog. how crude. Is that maybe what drives you to ride a bike? I ride bikes in gyms but traffic is too crazy today here for this old man to feel safer using an on-road bicycle. to each their own though mr harb.... carry on man

Harbottle: Sounds just like me, bodleing, except I'm not cycling alongside the Ashron Canal. There are a few disused railway tracks where I live that have been turned into cycle paths. I'm getting a bit braver about going on the road, but I avoid it if possible.
I think the Trans Pennine Trail runs near to you. There's a really nice section going through Penistone towards the Woohead Pass. If you have a good mountain bike you can head off to Derwent Valley via the fantastic but demanding Cut Gate track. Not one for the feint hearted though.... You can then join up with the Snake Pass and head back on a really quiet and remote road through the village of Strines. A fantastic day in the saddle.

Yes, the TPT does run past here. I've been on the stretch that goes through Penistone. I Drove to Wortley and rode from there through to Dunford Bridge and back. The Snake Pass option would make the ride a bit too epic. There's a really good stretch of path that runs from Woodhead to somewhere near glossop. I've walked on that, but haven't been on the bike, so I intend to get round to that sometime.

The TPT runs past my house in Stockport, I sometimes follow the River Mersey section to the Bridgewater Canal then on to Lymm, returning along the TPT. The section you mentioned towards Glossop is the Longenden Trail, it ends in Hadfield. It's difficult to make a circular ride out of it though. If you go from Penistone towards Woodhead you can leave the TPT, head towards Langsett and go around Langsett reservoir. This route takes you past a place called North America...I kid you not.....
