pat8lanips: Did you have to do it? I did today with a heavy heart, I believed someone was in danger. People I know and love having a dispute going beyond verbal.
It got me thinking, do I call it too soon? The last time I called the cops was someone running towards the river yelling about ending it all.
It's not easy, likeable people at their worst. Is there some kind of help or just incarceration and criminality?
In my opinion you've made a right call. Sometimes people you know very well make stupid things, which they will regret later.
They mostly roll their eyes every time I report a theft from my yard. They never do anything. I have to do it my self, beating them up or destroy something on their car when ever I catch them red handed. The police here are lacy cowards who prefer righting speeding tickets or form by their desk. Not much domestic violence in Sweden amongst Swedes.
Thanks, the should I or shouldn't have done something different, it's a bit of torment. But at that exact moment it seemed the only option. I would hope other neighbours also called, who knows. I have no faith the police would protect my anonymity, I have to live here.
I think it's something like 50-60% of police work here is domestic violence. It seems highly unusual that it would not be at least a serious issue in any developed country.
I think it’s a bystanders obligation to call the police in a dangerous scenario. Imagine if they done nothing & a fatality happened as a result of their ignoring the incident.

They must have sounded pretty bad for you to call the police. Imagine if you didn't call and someone got killed?

Sometimes a dispatcher can come across as very arrogant. “Annoyed” at your call. I spoke to a local police chief (who I’m friends with) about this. He validated me immediately; said she’s been talked to about her crummy ‘tude many times, and that civilians are reluctant to call in! So, I get why some people don’t want to call. Ten or so years ago, I was menaced by a woman driver in heavy Portland traffic. She was way out of line/control, and her anger was dangerous to others, not only myself. I got to my gym, used the phone and called the police. (There are signs all over the place saying to do this). Dispatch transferred me to an officer, a male. I gave him precise stats, her #’s, time, etc…he interrupted me, said, “Well, what’s YOUR name? What model and year car do YOU drive? And on and on, making the incident about me, not her. He was being a Richard Cranium, to the max. I did not feel like doing ANY reporting again. They don’t handle it right. I get why many people don’t want to call them.
