It might be unsettling to realize that there is no one you can vote for, nothing that can be done to make this industrial revolution not a crime against humanity. Generations in the future, if we survive, will look back at us as primitive, savage beasts thumbling around in the dark pretending to know what we are doing. It's going to be a long time before society corrects itself we've not even produced a Charles Dickens from the industrial atrocity of today.
Friskyone: Do you believe that people with drug addictions or those who suffer from mental illness, and they commit a crime, should they be punished/Incarcerated or should they get the help they need, rehab and medication management, if they need that, and therapy etc.?
I believe that there should be separate accommodations for both drug addiction and mental illness if "proved" There are millions of people out there suffering from a mental illness that have never committed a crime but can never receive the help that they need. Drugs to me are a different thing. I have 3 grown up kids aged 45, 40 and 32. I, as a parent warned them about drugs but it's not all about illegal drugs now..............
Depends on the mental illness. But as far as drugs are concerned, the majority of abusers are aware of the crime they commit and should be punished accordingly. If they need help , then seek it before committing the offence.
The problem with incarceration is that too many people get locked up for non-violent crimes...rehab or medication management could provide a better way for people who have health challenges...not to mention housing solutions...people in tent cities are populations with drug or alcohol addictions or mental health issues...hardly a good way to survive and cope with the day to day struggles...
If people studied how to treat incarcerated individuals...humanely like the Scandinavian people try to achieve with low rates of people reoffending...that would be a positive step in finding a solution for the prisons being overpopulated and run down...not to mention dangerous...
Ireland prisons have become a dumping ground for mentally ill patients, it's a health system they need not a prison sentence. I spent all yesterday emailing minister for justice for my own friend who has been thrown in jail as there is just no where else for her to go. It's a disgrace, it's the Irish health system that's sick...after days of radio interviews, papers etc they finally acknowledge today how bad it is.
My friend's mother was in a mental health facility since she gave birth and passed in there, now they throw her daughter in jail for similar diagnosis.
I got a reply from the minister for justice today, not much can be done with a judge ruling, but said judge simply said there was no where else to put her! Catch 22
Very sad world we live in, ashamed of my country today
Unfortunately...most systems are not ideal and do not solve mental health problems...nor addiction issues that often plague the mentally ill...helping people is not a dirty word...simply ignoring the problem the problem grows...get rid of the drug dealers...time for the government to look at how other countries are being creative in finding solutions...first step...
