its the situation in many relationships
it was just witnessed recently-new couple, one unemployed perpetually
sometimes when a partner is the one making the money
they feel they are in control of the relationship, or their life
even tho they may complain to others they unknowingly gain something from the arrangement
we can judge but people have to see their own motives and usually dont until there is hindsight available
i did it once in a four year relationship
with a younger guy
didnt see it til about a year after it was over
with the help of a dear friend who had the knowledge to wait
its a sticky wicket alright

I hate to say it but he sounds like a bum with no self esteem or respect. Does his mother have any opinion for the way he's behaving? Does she condone his actions? I find it hard to believe anyone would have been raised to be like that.
