California is getting bombarded with undocumented immigrants, and they keep having more kids, and once the child is born here, they get free food stamps, health care, even free housing, and each child gets about $400.00/ mo. and child care, and yet lot of us that work our buns off, can not afford health coverage. So these people have learned to come here and give birth, and they will have it made.
I think the welfare system is badly broken, but some people who really need it do get it. I have a neice who has 3 children, one with seriuos health problems. Her husband is out of the picture Thank God. He was not a good person. She works 30 to40 hours a week at McDonald's because it is the only work she can get. They work it out so she has no benifets at all. She gets help with food stamps and medical. Her little boy would have probably died if it weren't for the coverage she recieves.
I don't mean to sound cruel but if they don't pay taxes they shouldn't get assistance. You know the illegals don't pay anything. Whether their kids are born here or not, babies don't pay taxes.
Wow. California is quite different than Ohio then.
To qualify for welfare benefits (being a monetary check) here in Ohio, you have to prove citizenship. You also have to prove that your expenses for basic need (rent, utilities, etc..) outweigh your income. Any assets are counted against you. If you own a home, you don't qualify. The check itself is I think somewhere around $300 per child. In addition, the head of the household must work off the check for the state, at the rate of 1/2 minimum wage and a minimum of 20 hours per week or a maximum 40 hours per week. So a family receiving $600 for 2 children must work for the state of Ohio full time. Same with foodstamps.
In Ohio, you're better off getting a minimum wage job than getting welfare benefits.
We have partial paid child care. You can sign up for these voucher type things and then find a day care center that will accept them. They pay 1/2 of the day care bill for any hours you're working a job or working off welfare benefits.
We have HUD housing to help with rental costs, but I think that's a federal program, so it's probably the same in all states???
I don't doubt that it's probably different in California, but I'd hesitate to agree that these families "have it made". I don't know of any families who receive welfare benefits that I envy their lifestyle. Most I know who have help with their rent, also live in substandard housing. Most I know who receive foodstamps have to make $150 stretch to feed a family of 4 for an entire month. Most of them don't even own vehicles. They don't have a lot of the luxuries I take for granted like cable, internet, etc.. and many of their kids can't afford decent clothing and supplies for school.

Maybe they ought to try that in Denmark and Norway..... It's an inside joke from another thread. There shouldn't be any reason a person couldn't work for some of their benefits. (Generally speaking, of course.)
I don't think the system should be NIXed, but it should be changed.
For example, I know a girl who's a single mom of one. She doesn't qualify for crap because she works. The reason she requested help from the Welfare system is because, her baby's father, moved out of state and stopped sending child support payments. They are waiting for him to pop back up and put a brick on his paychecks. The Welfare office told her that she makes too much money. She explained how she's cut her costs on everything, but can't manage with the apartment, utilities, cost of daycare, etc. They basically told her sorry. Her response was something like, "So what you're telling me that because I work and don't want to rely entirely on the system, I'm not qualified, but if I quit my job, have a couple more kids, I am?" Pretty much told her yep.
I used to live in a fairly rough neighborhood. You'd see these women with nice cars, hair done, nails done, sitting at home on their porches all day, while their kids are running around like heathens, but paying for groceries out of food stamps!
Fact is, change the system. You must be required to show you are trying to get off the system. You must have proof of employment for X amount of hours a week. You'll receive X amount for day care expenses per child. The check will go directly to said daycare, not to the individual. You must be a legal US Citizen. ETC, ETC.
this thread really has nothing to do with our "welfare" system. This is really just another anti-immigration post!. No decent and caring country can do without a welfare system, to care for it's less fortunate. But ours needs a major overhaul.
If you are going to post anti-immigration rhetoric....call it that!!
I know, it's ok if you are here legally and you and your spouse have worked and paid taxes especially for children, but i live in San Diego, I accomponied my daughter to a women's center for cramps that don't seem to go away, once we entered this clinic, it was full of these women but every one of them had with her 3-5 children ranging from infant to 15yrs. old, and we looked at each other and said how come non of these kids is at school? non of the women work, they sit home and take care of the kids, the husband goes out and works and with as many children as they produce, the benefits keep on coming and coming, oh and yet, they don't speak english, because we have all the forms in spanish as well, it's not right.

"Caring" at the point of a gun? Hmmmmm...I always thought benevolence required voluntary assent.
I don't oppose your thoughts about immigration...that's what America is about! But I find it offensive when a person talks about "welfare", when it is geared to just the illegal immigrants. Call it as it is. You aren't against welfare, you are against illegal immigration.
I am of Mexican heritage, and find it amazing how many ways people hide their prejudices! Say whay you mean and mean what you say!!

I'm sorry, but how do you know this? That they don't work etc...
I have seen with my own eyes, (I was there), at this dental office, she gave us her medial and yet was asking the staff if we wanted to buy some gold jewelry from her, boy it took every thing for me to keep my mouth shut, plus i can't speak spanish. No here we pay the full amount for child care for them, and they knowingly will not work cus they will lose their benefits. and compare to how they lived before they got to U.S, they live in very modest and nice places, believe me, if u had to rent these apartment you would pay $1500.00/mo. so they do have it made in the America's finest city. and if they lose some of their benefits, then their rent will decrese.

I think it would be called "illegal-immigration". Keyword, illegal. Something Hillary or Obama won't say....
However, it's not just illegals....society has bread learned-helplessness into people. You can see it in any state and any area...it's just worse in some locations than others.
