I love this time of the evening. I live in an apartment building and there are apartments all around me. It is comfortable enough here now (even in January) to be able to open my balcony door, letting in a little fresh air. Someone in one of the apartments near me plays piano. He or she plays beautifully and whenever I hear the music, I turn off my CD player or tv or whatever I am listening to, open the door wider, and just enjoy the music. I often wish that this person would play a bit louder, but I mainly wish that I could tell him or her how much I enjoy the music. I'm treated to a concert almost every evening. Not knowing which apartment the music is coming from, I can only enjoy it and cannot compliment the musician. Tonight, this has made me wonder about how many things that we do that bring some sort of pleasure to others, even strangers, without ever realizing that we have done so. And, conversely, how many things do we do that cause others pain or sorrow, without meaning to do so?
This, to me, just reinforces that we DO impact others more than we think we do, in huge measures or in the smallest of ways.
As usual with most of my threads, I'm just thinking out loud.
Enjoy your day....and, if you happen to live on Dorylaeou Street, near Plateia Mavili, and you are playing the piano now...PLEASE play louder!

You're so right. It's the same here in Spain for me, the weather has been glorious and the smells, music and chatter waft in when I open my balcony doors.

It took me a while to get used to living in a flat having always lived in a detached house in the UK, but now the 'noise '(Spain is supposed to be one of the noisiest countries in Europe) is comforting.

When I work in Russia I really miss it because there is nobody on the street (apart from a few alcoholics) after 7 pm and it's just too quiet and lonely.

Wish I could, but the layout of the buildings would make it impossible.
One evening I'll simply step out and holler "Bravo!!!"!

great thred...thanks. But I am sure there isn't much I do to bring joy to others. Many have brought me joy, though they have no idea of the impression they have left on me.

To this day, I wish I could find my second grade teacher to tell her of the impression she has had on my life. But she will never know!!sigh

It's not usually this warm in January but it's been very warm....no coats...for the past two weeks here in Murcia. I'm desperately soaking up the rays before I go to Russia next week, it's gonna be freezing!

Never underestimate yourself in this regard. I would venture to guess that you have brought joy to others far more than you will ever know. hug

Interesting that you ask that, because that is exactly what I'm reminded of. I look across at the other apartments and wonder if I will one day realize that a murder was committed in the opposite building!

You could always ask some of your neighbors if they might know this person, or go to the office of the complex and ask them who it is..dunno

I'm not sure that my Greek is strong enough, but perhaps it is...I think I could probably sort out how to ask someone. Yeah, Daniel...I think I might just give it a go. (>>>>>>>>>>off to go look up the word for "piano" in Greek....it's probably PIANO!!! rolling on the floor laughing )

Get up ... throw off the cultural wall ... climb over the bacony and thru his window ....

the things we do .... no matter how little does indeed impact .... and also remembered ....

break out of prison ..... escape .... and the world will spin its favor with the spice of life ....

just DO IT ... forget how cold or hot the water is .... if one never did anything .... one woud never know .. what its really like ... to live and be alive ...

JUST DO IT ... break all boundarys ... make your own castle ....

I knocked on her door tonight. Her name is Christina, she is applying for a Fulbright scholarship, she is 26, and she plays beautifully. I told her how much I enjoyed her music, she brought me into her home, we had a drink together, we talked. I've met a neighbor, I've made a friend. Knock on the door.

I've so rarely been appreciative of loud music playing nearby, Athens, but the two exceptions I can immediately recall involve an opera singer - or some lady with a clearly elite voice - belting out Mozart through an open window as I strolled by. I so wanted to stop and ring her doorbell, but didn't do it.

Anyhow, if I came for a visit, I'd be sure to bring my giant boombox and serenade you with basso profundo rap.blushing wave hug
