Just had to clear out the flat of a family member, weird feeling. If you get rid of things you once liked, what do you think: how many cartons will you need to "pack your life in"?sad

No cartons. I got rid of the past long ago. Now I just have slightly more than what can fit in a suitcase ... and the slightly more part scares me ..... So I keep doing throw outs ... And it makes me feel great!

I even got rid of all my photograph albums .. the memories are in my head. Ditto for recipes.

Oh, and I got a small section of my life for my hobbies and paints, which are easily disposed of.

... Forgot to add an addendum ....... It is good that some people are hoarders - cause when they get frustrated, fat, dis-organised, and overwhelmed with all their possessions.... then they pay me to come throw it out for them and streamline their life........dancing

Believe me .... They be the Morbid folk before the event of ME in their life!... and afterwards they are SO happy and free! Sounds whacky I know .... but your lifestyle reflects your state of mind...... So I got an empty head, so what! I prefer that to have it cluttered full of filing indexes of where everything I own is... and worrying about inanimate things, and getting upset if I lose them, or break them, or someone steals them.

No amount of cartons will ever be enough.. I'm too sentimental to throw anything away! The feel of a long ago given gift...., a drawing of *mummy* from 12 years back, Pop magzines from 25 years ago!!...sigh

I'm trying to adopt this approach Smoky and it's becoming easier given that I spend half my life out of a suitcase. I also dislike clutter in my home, I'd hate to have all the stuff my mum has in her home

There are some things I can't throw away though, for example, my son's first homemade Easter card when he was about 4, my daughter's first birthday card to me with her own little verse inside made at playschool. They put so much love and effort into making those cards.

Dumped the wedding album quite easily though.....after 2 years!

Now I feel a little emotional!

to be perfectly honest with you, everything i own fits in 2 suitcases, since i kinda live around the world in this phase of my life, so i can relate with what you are saying. But its not a choise i made as i too am a bit on the sentiment side...

A few years back i broke out of a 6 year relationship, the serious kind. I remember i put everything i had from her in a litle box and took it to my mothers house. A looooong time later, i missed that person, not her but my memories of her. So i went and oppened that box: The amazing part in this little story is that as soon as it opened, i could SMELL her, her scent i mean (because things she owned had her scent on them inside the box)... i dont know if i managed to give what i am trying to say but, Now thats a memory worth having in a box!

Rented a place here in Town, and guess what, the Junk is already accumulating.

But then,worked for 30 years in a Scrap(Junk)-Yard.
So it doesn't surprise me THAT much.

A garage sale/giveaway--- is always a great leveller for ones mind trip toward new beginnings

Unfortunately garage sale is not common over here, there would immediately someonne come , saying, that it is contravening the regulations!professor laugh

The only things of sentimental value to me are photographs; they bring back some very happy memories. The old adage 'Less is more' really makes one's life less complicated.

Even a mantlepiece can look so nice with just one ornament such as a beautiful chunk of quartz rock to draw your eye than cluttered with lots of 'things' that just gather dust!

I used to hoard everything; even old magazines! I still find it hard to throw things away, but I feel really good once it's done. thumbs up

Passport, birth certificate, bank details, address book, a few photographs of family and other loved ones - and a change of clothes.........what more do you need to keep?

The best way to decide is this: If your house was burning down and you had just 30 seconds to get out - what would you grab on the way out?

(ok you guys - don't say your wallet and leave the hippo snoring happily in bed........... I'm talking inanimate objects here!)

well, for people that are used to sleeping in their birth suit, a pair of jeans and a shirt would more than cover for the 30 second time limit and maybe save a lot of embarasment once on the outside, rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Oh, I have tô fight with myself all the time over collecting stuff. I just love grooving thru junk shops - and I love junk! Now I collect feathers and rocks ... much easier to get rid of! When we go out on the boat on the Rhine, while I`m sitting in the back reading - the family are zig-zagging all over picking up swan feathers for me! (gives them something to do!).

In SA it was easy to get rid of stuff ..... so many poor people!

Yes, here too! People would think you`re insane if you try to sell your old stuff!

Going to the "dump" here on re-cycle days drives me insane.... when I see all the beautiful discarded stuff.....!

When I travel thru Germany on their "collection" days ......Gee, I could furnish my home with all the nice things out on the pavements....rocking chairs, lounge suites, carpets, beds, tables, beautiful chairs.......Then I remember my suitcase!

But ..... our new kitchen was rescued from being demolished, stored, and now fitted in our house ..... Virtually new... dishwasher, large fridge, extractor, sink, and masses of cupboards! The owner was willing to pay CHF1000 for its removal ...... so we got paid to remove it too!

It`s a crazy crazy world aint it? Some have so much, and some have so little.

If the house was burning down, I would need the 30 seconds, to jump down the stairs to get out! No time, to think of anything to grab!
Hope, that will never happen!
If I had time, I would take my identity card , something to prove my existence
grin , you don't know the bureaucracy over here! ( ok, exaggerated a bit)

hahahaha and lol and lmao and roflmao@bureaucracy over there if the only thing you need to prove your existance is an identity card!

Join me over in Romania: You'll need your identity, passport, the last 3 phone bills, the rental contract for your appartment, a special paper from some ministery that states how many square meters is that appartment (wich you will have to probably bribe someone to get) and 3 state oficials to verify the above. Oh, and about a week of waiting around in lines to get all that...

...oh, and thats just to prove that you do in fact exist and are not an elephant. Who you are is another tale...

Jan1305: I agree, have you seen the people who regularly frequent garage/car boot sales? They are like animals and won't pay a fair price for anything.

As well as the cards my kids made me which I mentioned earlier I cannot throw out the beautiful gifts my students from around the world have bought me.

Your post reminds me of when (yeah yeah I`m old enough to have the "reminds me syndrome"! but maybe it gives someone an idea of what to do with stuff you dont want to actually get rid of?)..... when I was trying to downscale and still had things .... well I draped necklaces around tree trunks, imbedded brooches / earings into the bark, put ornaments outdoors in the garden, where they looked better ....The things in the trees got grown around, and the stuff outside turned nice and greeny with moss and blended in.... before they returned to the earth. In that way it was less painful than just giving them away. For me anyway. I sometimes wonder if the be-decked trees gave anyone some amusement?

smoky: Send it to Africa! Just look on a map and pick a place far far away from any town or city and adress the box to "the citizens of xxxxxxx" and don`t put a return address. ...... or send it to a convent there... they all mission stations and look after the needy. Or "The Womens Auxilliary Committee" and mark it "Goods for re-distribution to the needy".

Good idea, though I haven't got a clue whether a 3 piece winter siut is so comfortable in Africa! Might be a bit too warm??

Occasionally I'm into recycling things down at the garage, and try to get something working out of all that junk like my first walkman and the lot.

Well my first walkman just got the radio but not the tape working and gave it away to a next door neighbour whose 1960's transistor radio broke down hug

An old car head unit and salvaged speakers, with some wood makes a good sound system for the sunday barbecues in the countryside.

I keep loads of clothes I don't wear anymore in hope I grow out of the beer belly and fit in them again, but they'd be old fashioned by then I'd figure out rolling on the floor laughing beer

I do give away things, but only to who appreciates the gesture and really has a use for anything heart beating
