Yesterday a Ca., meat processor recalled 143 million lbs., of hamburger from all over the US. For years they have been processing sick cattle, without testing for BSE. Glad I'm a vegetarian.

Hey Leo! How's it going?

I've been in survival situations where I've eaten things that would make a buzzard puke. And I've been with a vegetarian survival expert who "grazed" his way across a mountain meadow with no more food preparation than to wipe the dirt off on an incredibly filthy pair of blue jeans.

If I had a place to store it, I'd gladly take a fair portion of the beef off their hands, as it's also been reported that there have been no known illnesses related to the aforementioned hamburger...

Mind you, they taste nice...so its not all badrolling on the floor laughing

There is a sad, sad truth to this story but an even bigger reality.

When you slaughter 3500-6000 head of cattle per day in a meat packing plant, there is a chance that 1 in 4 carcasses will be contaminated. E. Coli is one of the number one contaminants but there are many others and at various stages carcasses are exposed to contamination and cross contamination.

Here are the things to remember.

1) Wash the surfaces you prepare food on, before after and during the cooking process. Don't let anything that has come in contact with raw food, come in contact with cooked food.

2) Prepare food according to safe handling practices (this includes cooking ground meats to an internal temperature of 160*F).

3) Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.

Check out the USDA web site for safe food handling processes and remember it's not just meat that can make you sick, but also improperly handled vegitables, and other raw goods.

I'd be the last person to defend my inhabitance, but it was a random sting. They suspect this sort of thing occurs all over the country.

I think a good steak would fix this...smoking

I too have eaten some pretty nasty things while on the trails and in the wilds. Most of them were dead, too. (nothing like a good grub for breakfast)
