I look at profile pics of men my age or a little older and nine times out of ten I think - jeeze he looks so old.

Now not to blow my own trumpet, most people don't believe my age when I tell them and I've inherited great genes from my mum who looks at least 10 years younger than her true age.

The big but though is do we ever really see ourselves as our real age or do we still imagine we are in our first flush of youth?

This is for the middle-aged folk amongst us so all you young people are welcome to give your views but until you age a little you may not be able to truly empathise .

Middle-aged - I dislike that expression and it brings to mind a class I had some time ago where we were discussing the very same along with other age expressions. I asked my students what age they perceived as middle-aged and they all said around 35. I was amazed and had expected them to say 50 or thereabouts. I then woke up and realised that in Russia where the death rate age is much lower, 35 is actually a realistic definition of middle-age.

Scary eh?

When I was 30 I had a very good friend, she was 72 - a vibrant go-getter type of glamorous old lady. She said to me "I feel young still, I think of myself as 19 .... but when I look in the mirror I say to myself "Fuuuuuck Sue!... how did you get to look like this?!"

You just reminded me of a friend of mine Smoky, I met her at art classes about 8 years ago.....She is 78!... and believe me, she makes 30 year olds look like 90!! What a fun, highly spirited woman....being around her makes me want to dance and act silly!!

God Bless you *Morgan*!

ROSE COLORED GLASSES
John Conlee

I don't know why I keep on believin' you need me,

When you've proved so many times that it ain't true,

And I can't find one good reason for stayin',

Maybe my leaving would be the best for you,

But these rose colored glasses, that I'm looking through

Show only the beauty, cause they hide all the truth,

And they let me hold on to the good times, the good lines,

The ones I used to hear when I held you,

And they keep me from feeling so cheated, defeated,

When reflections in your eyes show me a fool

But these rose colored glasses, that I'm looking through

Show only the beauty, cause they hide all the truth,

So I just keep on hopin', believin that maybe,

By countin the many times that I've tried,

You'll believe me when I say I love you and

I'll lay these rose colored glasses aside,

But these rose colored glasses, that I'm looking through

Show only the beauty, cause they hide all the truth,

'cause that's what they do to you.sigh

Thanks for the responses, but nobody has said they too look at people the same age or thereabouts and think like I do..... does nobody else think "jeeze don't they look old?"

I can't believe it's just me!

I do agree though that we are are as old as we feel and I've also met many older people who are vibrant and beautiful.

That's not really my question though.

We were never meant to wear spectacles - even though our heads seem to be designed for them!.....you know, ears in the right place, nose in the right place.... Because then as we get older, we just would never see the details of ourselves or our partner ageing! We would just see a devine blur! and keep the young image in the mind as what we seeing.jackolantern

Just think ... that would maybe have solved the divorce problems - and men chasing younger women?

Jan only just saw your thread ...

Yeah in UK I'd look around me and think a vast number of people around my age looked and acted older than me ... Here in Spain, most people can't believe my kids are grown up and I have grandchildren ... Same as you I'm just lucky to have good genes ...

As for what Smoky was saying about clothes and looking foolish in "young trend clothes" my kids and even my Mum are under strict instructions to tell me if I start looking ridiculous laugh And like Smoky I shall continue to buy my clothes in the younger fashionable style ...

bouquet For all the ladies to refuse to grow "old" before they need to!!! yay

Thanks Smoky.

I know what you mean, I've been in similar situations where younger friends seem not to discriminate but I DO feel older in these situations nowadays. It is great though when younger people are your friends simply because you are you and age isn't a barrier. I see that more in Spain than in the UK where I feel there is much more age discrimination.

I won't cut my hair short because I've always had long hair and I like it this way but there are people who think at a certain age women should go for the short look.

Like your sister who probably thinks you dress too young for your age - who decides when we should cut our hair or start dressing like our grandmothers? It's nonsense isn't it?

There are ways to dress in a fashionable way without looking as though we are trying to emulate our daughters.

But you still didn't answer my question - do you look at male profiles and think what an old fart?????

I have a friend who is always saying men my age and hers (in their 40's) look like old prootses.
She also thinks she looks younger than me. She doesn't.
We both totally look our age.
I have a very furrowed brow and wrinkly eyes a few white hairs that I don't dye.
She has wrinkly eyes and jowls and dyes her hair 'cause it is almost completely white.

I count that guys don't dye their hair and can't fall back on fashion to save the day as easily as we can.

To answer your question, Jan wave no, I think most people, men and women, look about their age.

And I stopped wearing mini-skirts when I was 35.
My legs continued to be passable in black tights, I just didn't think they went with the wrinkles... help

I agree, most people look their age, some look better for their age than others, but mostly they do look their age. I suppose I do too but I don't care (most of the time)

as for miniskirts, I haven't stopped wearing them, alright, they're no longer wide belts size but they're short dresses. I think my legs are still ok and if they're not, sodd them! they can look elsewhere!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

sometimes, people look at me as I walk down the street, when men do that, I don't worry, but when women do it, it makes me wonder if I look good or if I'm scaring the **** out of the population!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
