I bought 2 old 10 speed bikes, but spent more on the locks to secure them. Past 2 weeks I have started pedaling and using the public transportation system in my area for work.
I do not drive but my daughter does and now will not just take me anywhere I want to go anymore as she says the gas is too hight and to walk or take a bus.

In europe we are used rto the high prices Still, a bit of excercise and fuel saving doesnt do anybody any harm!!
sadly the public transportation in my area is lacking, Buses only have a bracket to hold 2 bikes at one time so, I needed 2 bikes. one at each location so public transportation would even work for me.

Yes, it is easier here. Europe has had high gas prices for so long, they have developed excellent mass transit systems, plus lots of bike paths, etc. The US needs to adapt though, and not be so much at the mercy of OPEC.
Portiea: take a long relaxing bike ride on country roads?
LOL, thanks but there are not that many country roads in these parts. I could take the train however to a spot upstate or out on the island and find a nice trail. I am still not sure it will be the same thing. We will see this summer!

Having grown up in NYC I know that driving on "Long" Island is anything but relaxing.
As for me I can't tighten my fuel belt much more than I already have. I've always been extremely frugal when it comes to saving fuel.
Some of the vehicles I've owned reflect this.
Renault Douphine Renault Le Car (2X) Opal Caravan (1,000cc's) Ford Festiva (1300cc's) 5 motorcycles 2 Hillmans (1500 cc's) currently a Mazda Protege (1500cc's) and a Mazda Miata (1800 cc's) The biggest car I ever owned as a daily driver was a 64 Mercury Comet 6 cyl which I gave to my neice for a refrigerator.

That does it... Now I know I am moving to Venezuela!!
But I won't have a car when I get there, so I won't need any gas!
Thanks for the pricelist... Very helpful information.
Great that you thought of the two bikes, one for each location. Smart guy
I was already a hermit. Now, I venture out of the house when not working, about twice a month, instead of several times a week. I have a little 149hp scooter which gets 85mpg also, I have a 21 speed mountain bike. As the weather continues to warm, I am sure I will be getting much more use out of both of these.
I have had to quit taking long runs in the Peterbilt and stay with the short haul loads. Fuel was eating up all of my profits. Long distance does not pay as well and fuel cost to much.
Much work to do on the farm with plowing and planting so staying home is beneficial now.

LOL, agreed, driving on Long Island can be just the opposite of relaxing. Since you are a local I can mention specifics like the Ocean Parkway and Robert Moses and WAY out to the north fork (never south fork) and if you leave early enough you pretty much have all the roads to yourself. My current car, while not a sports car, is considered by some a high performance vehicle.
I guess what I am saying about LI is that you really have to be in Suffolk.
what upsets the most is having to purchase old beat-up bikes. the theft rate on bikes has risen considerably especially in places where bikes are left unattended for hours at a time. 25 dollarsecuring devices to protect 10 dollar bikes is just a bizzarre staement of todays society.
