You can get either Zone Alarm or Comodo Personal Firewall. They are both free. The following are their links:

I do not have a webcam and my daughter does not want to get one for those reasons, but it would come in handy when talking to my dad in ontario who I have not seen for 30 years. I have pictures but on the webcam it would be more real.
kissmedeeply: Okay i dont have a router...just a modem..i do have a firewall installed on the computer..
That's nice to hear!!
Just make sure that occasionally you check if there were any updates for your firewall!!
Whilst reading the previous posts, some of them reflected my worst nightmares regarding computer security. If a person is able to control your web cam, mouse pointer, etc etc, they can easily access any personal files you have on your computer, so please be careful and protect your computers!!

I'm afraid that its not that simple to get rid of it, as that way you are only getting rid of the icon.
The best way is to disable it from the My Computer properties.
Press the Windows key (the one with the flag printer on it) and the Pause key simultaneously. Click the Remote tab in the resultant window, and untick both of the lines starting with Allow. Please note that the previous are instructions for Windows XP.
