gringa: <--- li'l guy is kickin' his legs and tryin' to float...someone told him to suck in some air...tips over quit a bit..poor guy

Xtabentun....I'm so jealous! I can't float no matter how hard I try.

I've always wondered if it is possible for anyone to learn how? Or are we doomed to our float/sink status?

I remember my dad teaching me how to float as a kid....and how to swim too, throwing me into the water roll eyes

But ever since I learned, that's how it was always in the water...swimming is still not one of my strongest points. I am actually learning how to sink now

Having been raised in South Miami Beach, Florida, I can't remember when I couldn't swim, float or tread water, either in the ocean, pool or lake. I don't know of anyone who can "float" vertically, unless they are wearing a life jacket. When treading water you must constantly move your hands and feet to keep your head above water.

FlowerOfTheSun: I have discovered today that I am not alone!!! Apparently some people just can't float ...
All to do with the density of the body!!! I can apparently swim (was confirmed today - always thought I couldn't), dive, swim under water, float on my back BUT can't float verically in the water (tread water) It was driving me nuts!!!

So apparently people who are slim AND muscly find it harder to float!!! Because their body is denser!!! Looks like I'm pretty dense coz I don't last more than a second with my mouth above water when I am in treading water position!!!
Still ... keeps me quiet for a while!!

What about you? Are you a floater or a sinker?

I got the built-in buoys and I learned how to float at 8. Have you ever tried to snorkel with a vest? I was told I HAD to wear one to get off the boat. (I read the fine print) I tossed mine back at the boat. I have to think to sink. I could float all day on a calm sea. It comes natural. I can float anyway, vertical (my legs get tired), horizontal, all day, I can ride waves and float. I love the ocean, love to dance on the waves.

I can float for ages and totally adore the feeling too - its one of my favourite feelings........

I stood earlier today listening to the little river nearby and almost had the same feeling of peacefulness but actually being in the water and immersed up to my breathing areas I find totaly appealing to my senses and a really rather primitive experience grin

(Damn this girl moves! Didn't she used to live in Texas?)

When I spoke of vertical "floating" it's a slow swim with occasional arm and leg motions to keep one's head above water. After about 30 minutes, I would go for a horizontal float. Floating requires no effort. A backswim is almost effortless, to me. I never worry about open water. I'm certain I swim well enough to survive anything.

If you're worried about it. Practice. Learn how to float. I'm sure it's something we learned and practiced, as kids. A friend told me I saved her from drowning.

She swears I saved her life. I don't remember the day. There's only been two occasions I might remember doing something, they didn't involve swimming. With practice, all swimming comes natural.
