I sink like a rock. It has to do with body fat%
I recently had a test and they had to give me 4 lbs to get on the scale at having 4% body fat. yeah thats right i can eat everything and I do. Waiting for hate mail now.

High Five!!!!!! No hate mail!!! Same here!!!

It has to do with body fat percentage in relation to muscle and bone mass. It has nothing to do with weight. Also affected by where the fat is distributed on the body.

So I read on the net yesterday!! One guy was saying he is a swimming instructor BUT he can't tread water either due to low index body fat and high density muscle and bone.

I am sure that if a professional swimming instructtor can't "learn to float/tread water" then it's because some people just can't float!!!

Ok so it might help a bit to fill your lungs with air for a minute to stay afloat a bit but not exactely helpfull if you are out of your depth and get a leg cramp or something where you have to rely on keeping your head out of the water and being able to breath while you sort yourself out!!! mumbling

FlowerOfTheSun: I have discovered today that I am not alone!!! Apparently some people just can't float ...
All to do with the density of the body!!! I can apparently swim (was confirmed today - always thought I couldn't), dive, swim under water, float on my back BUT can't float verically in the water (tread water) It was driving me nuts!!!

So apparently people who are slim AND muscly find it harder to float!!! Because their body is denser!!! Looks like I'm pretty dense coz I don't last more than a second with my mouth above water when I am in treading water position!!!
Still ... keeps me quiet for a while!!

What about you? Are you a floater or a sinker?

Try to relax your mind and inhale.Practice this. Then tilt your head back.Arch your back , and try to float on your back.
The increased air in your lungs WILL indeed allow you to float.

Once in this position try shallow breathing only with you lungs full of air.

Hope this helps. That would be horizontally. It should work vertically as well.
You need to relax.comfort

You don't normally get too many water-born special forces guys who are carrying a few extra pounds!!

On the hypothermia argument though if you have a little extra natural padding you will survive longer on colder seawater if you unlucky enough to have a ship sink under you.
