In any scenario the prime thing is to not compromise yourself with dishonesty! I believe a woman will respect you and understand if your open and honest and if she doesn't ... well that's not your problem, it's hers. Every time you say or do something stupid people will remember and you undermine yourself especially with dishonesty. Build a code of ethics ans live by them, change them if need be but stick to them and you will never feel bad about something you have don!

If this is the case and their assumption is "dead wrong," they should ask themselves what kind a friend are they to you really.
I've always found generalization as compared to total honesty works when you are attracted to more than one. Some things one should just not reveal in the beginning stages of a possible budding relationship.
