DatDude03: Communicating effectively will go a long way in a relationship.
applause It's the biggest thing I believe also, but also always realizing thru problems we are on the same side, and both willing to work together to solve it.

vonney: One saying that drives me crazy.
No its not.

It scars you and leaves you more fearful every time it happens and you end up with either less to give or no more relationships at all.wine

Ship, by your criteria, I have had nothing but successful relationships, which in my case is blatantly not true.wine

Enduro: I agree and perhaps the old adage is valid here:

" It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all."

To me a successful relationship is one in which both parties get what they need. People from the outside can´t judge what works for others.

While I want a partner that is equal with me, that doesn´t work for everyone... my ex husband wanted me to be the person in charge, make all the decisions etc. It didn´t work out between us but when he remarried he married a very domineering woman and they`re both happy.

My sister on the other hand wanted a very strong man, someone to take charge... she made a huge mistake with her first husband and what she thought was strength was really just a bully, the second time around she got it right and has a very strong husband who makes most of the decisions, doesn´t want her to work outside the home (they have 5 kids) and totally adores her, she loves cooking and pampering him and they are incredibly happy together.

One of my best relationships was finite going into it and we both knew it... he was much younger and had been through a really horrible time when his pregnant fiance was killed by a drunk driver. I was starting a new chapter in my life after raising my daughter and was starting a 3 year backpacking journey around the world. We had an amazing year together and helped each other through transitions in both of our lives... I think it was a very successful relationship.

I don't know about others but, the longest one I had lasted 14 years. There is truth to the old saying that one never knows what they have until it is gone..

I had two that lasted 16 years each. But the one that lasted 4 years was just as successful....maybe more, because we are still friends

Of all the relationships I've had regardless of time, I am friends with all but one of them. Good friends. All of them tell me what a lovely person I am, but the crunch is that none of them could live with me nor I with them, so the relationship couldn't have been successful, regardless of the time we spent together.

A good relationship, in my opinion, has to be measured by length of time together, not length of time as friends apart........wine

shipoker55: Is it always about longevity??

I contend that a successful relationship is about quality time spent together. If a couple is only together for a few months and it ends amicably. Then it was a good relationship. Ashort one...but a good one. If a couple is together 20 years, with constant fighting, or cheating on each other, then that was a much worse relationship that the couple together for only a few months.

A relationship is about quality time together...not quantity of time.Anyone agree??

To me it's both - quality and quantity.

Relationship is a success if neither is looking for the way out.
