desmond: Shelley I am mixed half white half black and before I came to america I lived and was born in Barbados and race was never an issue >I think it sad when someone judges you on race and not what you are really about but that life

Yes Desmond this is sad but the truth is even today, races'm does still exist.
I know I am bringing a very delicate point to the survice.
Not too many would dare to touch this subject with a ten foot pool.
But we should be able to talk about this freely.

I've dated women of all races.

My last serious date was with a girl from work who is mixed black-and-red. We sure had a lot to talk about and we're still great friends. It didn't work past that because we're too different, but not because of race. It was an age thing...

Interesting that it still bothers people so much. It doesn't seem that there is any "assimilation" possible really, and perhaps it's just as well.

A mixed couple means that any children born to them would be mixed - thoroughly and irreversibly. Maybe there is someone here who's into ethnology or demographics that could explain what that can possibly mean for the human race in general?

Personally, I don't care either way, as long as it's not one of those stories when two people get together, produce 5 kids in 5 years and are splitting up because the race/ethnicity of the other one is "preventing them from understanding each other". wow

Hugz_n_Kissez: Yes...me too and it's funny you mention that because the Natives here experience just that...based n stereo-types and when I meet people and tell them I'm Native they very often say to me..."OHHHHHHH you don't look native"....OR the proverbial..."well you sound sooooooooo educated "...I used to get...like all natives aren't educated....and the truth is..I'm not that well educated...I only have 2 years of college...but I have a lot of life experience....So yes...I see judgment all the time....based on who people think we are...NOT who we are as individuals.....and I still haven't figured out just what the standard Native is suppose to look like either.....

Yes Shelley I hear you and the native guy I dated a few times would show me newspaper clippings that showed he had his own radio show etc. was good at what he had been doing, but his main reason was he did this to show me he was not just a nobody, a ignorand native.
I understood where he was coming from and felt sad that he felt the need to show me this.
But the truth is ignorances still prevails, even today!

Harleyquinn: And thank you too sir
I mentioned this the other day or yesterday, tracing the mitochdrial DNA( passed down from the female) researchers have found that we all go back to a single female from Africa about 100,000 years ago. So technically we all have African ancestry.

I watched a show on PBS television awhile back, it was about ancestry. They traced the roots of Oprah, Chris Rock, I think Morgan Freeman and several other celebrities(African) and they all had caucasian blood(genetics) also. I mean, even 2 glasses of water setting next to each other for 100,000 years are bound to share a few molecules sooner or later.

The sooner we could all realise that we are all humans/earthlings and get over it, the sooner we could start focusing on something that is actually important SHANTI

I agree with people who are of a different race.
How can whity change this, one at a time?
Like I have changed in a way but my only reason not to date this black man any further at the time, was not based on him being black, but to whities reaction seeing us together.

mylifewithu: There is always more things some do to discriminate against people. When it's not color , then its a crippled person, or someone who is a burn victim, people always find things to look down on someone. That is something I just don't understand.

Sadly so!

What an odious knack people have developed!

I was married to a Native American for 2 years. Had a beautiful pipe ceremony. We burned our flesh offerings about 2 months ago, which is the same as divorce, and went our seperate ways. My spirit was broken, hence the name I use, although it is on the mend. I loved this man very deeply, but our split had nothing to do with his being Native. Although living near 3 reservations I see a lot of pure hatred and believe it or not in this area a lot of that is among the different tribes themselves. I truly wish we could all see past color and accept each person for what they are, but unfortunately I don't think I will ever see it in my lifetime.

When i was younger i used to care so much about what other people will think and say if i date someone from a different race.

Now i don't really care.I mean if there's someone who should understand more, it is I who come from a race that has been discrimated for a relatively long period.

I agree with anyone who says that it's not the color or race, it's what inside that counts. As long as two people get along well, are there to stick it out with each other, slug through the tough times and repeat the happy times, who are we to judge?

on a seemingly selfish note, we don't choose to be someone because we want to please people(although, this happens at times), we choose to be with someone because we want to please ourselves.

you can put "pleasing" in whatever contextdevil

Although the way I raised my kids will not change the world. They don't look down on others for those for being different, rather its color or it's a deformity or whatever. Any three of my kids would help someone different than them and above all treat them as they would want treated theirselves. All I could do was the best I could in my little part of the world. We all just have to do our best at doing our part in making changes. Then someday it will all come together. There is a lot less descrimination with the handicap and mental ill people etc. , some things are getting better, just not fast enough in my opinion.thumbs up

Often the best we can do for the world or a certain situation is to
be a positive ion, not another negative.

Back in79 0r 80 I liked a blak lady. We wurked together and went out for lunch a few times. One time we went to a nice resturant at a hotel a few blocks away and people both Black and White were staring at us and made bad faces toward us. It made me upset and angry and didn't want to pursue anything with her. We both felt uneasy then and I didn't want to put her through that again I got laid off Aug. 80 and never seen her again. If that happened now I would discuss it over with her and see what happens instead of making that decision with her. The town we worked in was mostly Black and Spanish.

While living is Los Angeles I became a volunteer at a hospital in Inglewood.
I wanted to find out if I would make a good nurse.
I was to work with two black women.
I over heard the following conversation between these two.
"Oh I told my daughter she could bring home a boyfriend but No darky"
The blacks are discriminationg among themselves.
OMG, is this white blood sooo precious, have whitie done this to the blacks and to the natives too?
How very sad!
My sister married a half indo and half white person.
This man and his sister told me that they would never have married another Indonesian because they wanted to increase the white blood by only chosing whites for mates.
Will this never end the superiority of white's thinking they are better than anyone else that is not white?

By dragging others down some can feel more superiour.
The truth is, those who do the dragging, have a problem with their
own self-esteem.

I am afraid your right equality we may never get to see in our life time.
What would it take to change this attitude of whitie's feeling superior to other races? I don't know.
Where did the believing of white's feeling superiour come from, I don't know that either!
What I do know is that many white's Do feel superiour, period!

You would understand why I let this black man go at that time.
Because of other people.
How sad huh? But the truth!
Oh yes a good black family may not have been willing to accept me either.
I do not believe too much has changed today, except in the hearts of a few of us.

A lot of Natives think like that too for preserving the Native bloodline...but I suppose they have better reasons because of the assimilation policies of the government a lot of people have lost their Native status...they are still Native...but the government says they're not due to marrying non-natives...I don't think like that....I won't choose someone based on a blood line...that's not the way my heart or feelings work...I fall in love with the individual...no matter what race it is....wine

Shelley not being recognized as native, can make a different money wise.
I live right now on native land here, as do about 8,000 others on the Westbank Native reserve.

Please tell if your "suffering" from race'sm'
Do you believe this will ever end?
When I moved to L.A in '68 you did not even see a black
cashier anywhere.
So far that goes a lot has changed.
But I believe race'sm is still going on today. dunno

I agree it make a difference monetarily and benefit wise...but...even if the government told me I was no longer native...that doesn't change what's in my blood...and it won't change the fact that I can't help who I fall in love with either...regardless of who they are....wave wink hug teddybear hug bouquet
