I would hate to grow very old and die slowly slowly ...... if i was in that position i would much rather be given the possibility to end it qucikly and with dignity ..do you think people should be helped to die with dignity if they request it ?????? or do you believe this is wrong????

i watched somebody close to me dying slowly over a four year period...she suffered from alzheimer's, became increasingly frustrated as she slowly lost all ability to communicate, and became more and more convinced that the people caring for her were trying to kill her. in the end, she had to be restrained to stop herself harming or getting harmed - by running out in traffic, etc. she went through a living hell before passing on to eternal peace. it's an experience i will carry with me forever. i miss her dearly. if i ever get like that, i think i would prefer to die with dignity.

The Jury in my Mind is still debating the Issue.
What I fear most is,if a totalitarian Gang takes over a Country that has such provision under the Law,they could kill any of the Opposition with impunity!
There would have to be Safeguards over Safeguards.uh oh hole

Voluntary as opposed to involuntary, that is the question, whether those safeguards of safeguards will actually stand up against a state that has a dictatorship is indeed a moot point

I believe that anyone who gets cranky and boring in their old age should be put under...being that way myself already, I would say that clemency should be given to those under 65...this rule would guarentee that people make an effort to be nice once they are of pensionable age...jmo

I have one problem with voluntary euthanasia - say you are old and had a lethal disease and you could choose voluntary euthanasia......... what if you knew that with treatment your life could be prolonged (with some quality of life for some considerable time - say three years for example) BUT that money could be spent saving the lives of three younger people with a greater life expectancy?

By opting for voluntary euthanasia (in this scenario) you are allowing other people to live - that's not a decision an individual should have to make except in times of war or to protect loved ones......... and neither is it one for a doctor as he/she has promised to do his/her best to save life and it's kinda out of his/her remit to play God.

Like sending young people away to die in a war, deciding who should live and who should die is a terrible decision for whoever has to make it.............. there are so many things that could result from an 'innocent' desire to prevent suffering that could have consequences we haven't thought about.

If a person wishes to commit suicide it may be against his/her religion but it is his/her decision.......to allow somebody else to make the decison isn't fair, and I've seen somebody very close die recently who was in great pain for long periods at a time but really wanted to live and he did live even though his body was falling to bits..... because he was mentally tough........... although he suffered terrible pain for many weeks a year before he died (and at one point was howling like an animal it was so bad and actually at one point said he wanted to die he recovered!

He had some real quality of life for another year, then suddenly 'keeled over' and died almost instantly - thank God he didn't suffer when his time was really up.

I DO HOWEVER BELIEVE IT IS NOT WRONG TO REMOVE ARTIFICIAL LIFE SUPPORT WHEN A PERSON'S INTERNAL ORGANS - KIDNEYS ETC AS WELL AS THEIR BRAINS HAVE SHUT DOWN AND CAN'T FUNCTION ON THEIR OWN.......... one problem here though is that people are being declared dead very early so that their organs are nice and 'fresh' to be used as transplants.

Well, considering how close some of us, actually most of us, have come to death - I do believe that the timing of our death is quite perfect.... as is our birth.

Personally, I have missed death sometimes by a couple centimetres, and sometimes by a few minutes. So I know that the timing of my death will be perfectly orchestrated.

Sometimes, I believe, others have things to learn by our lives ... We do not know what.

Not everthing in life, despite the TV advertisements, is Perfect... according to our own knowledge, which at the best of times is limited.

There is more to Life, methinks, than Birth and Death.........

But, anyway, I do hope, should I become befazzled and a hindrance, senile and not longer able to care for myself, that I exit gracefully, minus artificial hindrances. I am just SO curious about what happens...... and if what I believe is realy true.......and if not, what there Realy Is......

good morning all .......cheering cheering colder morning today ..well in terms of Malta anyway .........yay you need to wear a sweater finally ..................thanks guys for all the replies ..........even the factuous ones tongue tongue ........

What i really wondered though why is it that it is thought incorrect for someone to aid a person who really wants to end it all because the person's quality of life in physical terms has really become unbearable??????????........after all shouldnt we all have the choice to make that decision???????
