TheresMyFriend: Could be the "turbo-ignition-starter" prior to final combustion in the main unit! Just joking....I have no idea, but sounded good anyway.
so it bangs before lighting or just before it starts blowing?
if in the basement.. the unit gets very cold when not in operation, then when it heats up it is normal that it will make a lot of noise, I would also imagine it makes a lot of noises again as it cools down,

basement is not cold, heat blows into it too
it bangs just when the pilot ignites and the flames spread out, sometimes it will bang two or three times in a roll.
Yeah trust your instincts even if its minor it will make you feel better. If you have lived there a few winters already then you know what's sounds right. Could check online if you have any idea what type of furnace. Type in the furnace name and troubleshooting see what you come up with.

It sounds normal if its a cluttering sound that's constant for a few seconds every few minutes or so. I've laid blocks in basements near furnaces, and I WAS TOLD it was normal, although I'm not a furnace expert.

Can't really safely say then without actually looking at it, most likely just the purge stage. but as was said.. if it has not been making this noise in previous years.. I would call and have the gas CO. check it out. If no problems found, you may have to pay the bill, if a problem is found, then the bill should be sent directly to the landlord.
The bang sounds normal when it's first ignited. Then it should be cluttering sounds every so often and once the heat spreads it should eventually die down, but like I said,I'm not a furnace expert, and if you're landlord doesn't want to give you straight answers, or if you're worried about it,you might want to go call a specialist in furnaces just to play it safe. In my opinion,I think it's best to go straight to the experts in furnaces,we can give you opinions.....but we're not experts in furnaces.

I am talking shaking the floor, it is so loud it makes me jump.
The landlord says it is just the cold air in the ducks, but has been happening for awhile now.
