Is there anyone here who still practices this old custom?

The Extra Place at the dinner table is set - for the unexpected guest.

A Polish friend told us of this custom in his country, where any lonely or poor soul with no-one and nowhere to eat on Christmas day, is welcome to knock on any house door and know they will be invited in and fed.

So this year we have decided to do this, and to try and revive this custom in our family - except we catering for lots of lonely single people who dont have family or close friends to eat with. We will have the private family dinner on Christmas Eve - and on Christmas day a buffet for whoever wants to come to our house.... to eat, drink, and be merry.

What a great idea! People should adept to this custom again... so on Christmas there will be less poor souls out in the streets!

What a beautiful tradition, smoky.

We have Christmas lunch at my parents' every year, and for years I have brought along a roast turkey. With all the food there, more than an extra person would be more than welcome. dancing

And it has in fact happened, that some long lost frined of theirs has come along on Christmas Day just as we were having lunch, and he was most welcome to join us.

Being an Italian household, there is always enough for a small battalion!roll eyes

It used to be very common in Romania, especially in the villages in the mountains. But this habbit almost vanished. Almost, as I know some people who still do it.

By the way, it was done every day, not only on "special occasions".
