I live by the beach and love the views – every day I see the view and smile because I am here and I made it happen. There is an endless expanse of very clear sky in which to star-gaze but solo its not so enjoyable. I am a bit of a nature nymph and love being outside as much as possible – mountains, rivers, streams, woods, beautiful vistas, all visual poetry to my eyes. I love jaw-dropping views – whether its Sydney Opera House with the bridge in the background to a rainbow breaking over the Twelve Bens in Connemara. I love to travel and have been around the world but again not much fun solo.

Tell me where your secret place is, where you can honestly say your jaw hit the ground the moment you saw it. Go on, dont be shy - I wont tell anyone, honest!

Well, I have seen a lot of beautiful landscapes....Riviersonderend, the Cape Winelands, Franschoek in Cape Town...for beautiful hills and dales, Appenzellerland in Switzerland...for a bit of everything, perfection on a chocolate box, try the Thunersee in the Berner Oberland....but the nicest valley I ever saw was in a brassierre, but that's just me, ya know...(sorry, you asked for honesty..)

I distinctly remember my first "jaw-dropping" moment ...... out jogging in the early morning in the Southern Drakensburg of SA.

I was used to jogging on the Natal Coastline - you go south or you go north, the weather never changed - the land is flat and the sea was always there - and the humidity, and the sweat ....

And then I was up in the mountain area for a few weeks - cool, crisp, lots of mist. So I got up early and went for this run, used to running with my eyes on the road ahead, and I came round a bend in the road ....... and saw this magnificent mountain rising out of the mist ahead .... with snow on top of it, and it brought me to a sudden stop! Was like magic! I had not noticed this mountain before - it was just the angle of the road somehow and without the backdrop of the houses around about, and the sun shining thru the lower mist - it absolutely sparkled - so majestic!

What a wonderful thread.

Beautiful reading.

My jaw dropping place is here, in Austria, when I firt moved here, I was driving around the local area, I drove up and up to look for the local ski slopes and this roda took me back on myself, you know how it is, where you do a semi circle, and as I was approaching the downturn, there was the most amzing of the mountains that took my breath away.

Something very powerful about that place for me, when I saw it, I knew I had come home, I will always remember that feeling of emotion as I turned, always.

Just wonderful.

Thank you for such a lovely thread.

Wow, some truly amazing insights. See what happens when we think a little on what inspires our inner child, what creates visual poetry for us, what takes us out of the ordinary and transports us to a truly transcendental place.

Beats the hell out of the mundane material world, doesn’t it? Particularly at the moment.

Bring it on………….. jaw-dropping I mean lol

Hi all, I'm new to this forum, and this thread kind of got me going.

Well as shipmaster I've travelled round the world a bit and came across quite a few good places. But the awe inspiring ones are mostly to do with nature or in places and communities unaffected by the rigours of fast paced modern living.

Nowadays its a tiny Pelagic island hideaway close by which I visit every summer. Great small island community, excellent diving, long drinks, no radio or TV (my choice) where I simply relax and recharge with a good book. And where the senses relax so much that panic often strikes on the day I have to travel back to the real world!

So many beautiful places far away from the concrete boxes and towers of sand--- sooo close , Gum trees that almost touch the sky with the sparkle of the ocean nearby-- hidden valleys with streams bubbling over rock filled with silver fish and freshwater crayfish ( no crocs where I live) the birds ,multitude of colour or plain black and white some that laugh and others that sing so sweetly they melt the heat scars of fogotten dreams

there are no mountains in this place only small thrusts of the earth for you see this is a graced place perhaps its the white crystal bed seems to even subdue the depths of the earth- winters snow is non existent though the coldness ensures our mere mortal status just enough to realise some times we need to rest, take stock and prepare for new beginnings which enevitably arrive in a blink of an eye

In the jungles of Sri Lanka, way past Kandy over towards the east side, there is a high crest on the road where it passes through a Sandalwood forest.

In here the number of wild elephants is not known, but they are plenty, and they are a curious kind.

I loved stopping here on my way to the east coast, parking the bike and just sit on the stones by the side.

The fragrance of sandalwood, the sounds of the jungle and then a peek from an elephant cub... Nothing ever beat this.

The most jaw dropping moment in my life was as a child being taken to the edge of a Cliff in Africa and looking down on the most amazing waterfall, It was the Victoria falls and remains a picture in my head of immense beauty and power, the noise was something elselaugh
