Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under.
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.
The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.
(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns.' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.
The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.
My best friend lives in Australia. His mother was robbed twice when she was in her back yard. His sister and brother-in-law caught some in their back yard. There was a scuffle, his sister was injured, not badly, and the scumm got away. Also my friend does not even go out in his yard to do yard work without locking his doors.
Yet here in my small community I don't like my door unless I am going to be gone for more than a day. How different things are in different countries and states.
....and when i went oversea's Austraslian customs wouldnt let me back in, as they thought i was a illegal traveller coming in a false passport... what a joke, but then again... i seem to fit into all walks of life...

so what are you pushing here?? that australians take up arms?? what a ridiculous notion..........your facts are incorrect to by the way.................
I can't comment on the stats your Aussie friend provided. What I can say is that the personal weaponry that was surrendered would have been arms deemed illegal, such as sub machine guns, and whatever others they may be. My cousin was a gun dealer, and I know his wife and daughter also own guns in their own right. But they do so within Australian law, which requires them to have a gun license which in turn requires them to be a member of an authorised pistol club, with strict criteria such as being trained to shoot and certain number of attendances at the club per annum. May I say that years ago, I did very well at firing a magnum, even achieved several 'bulls eyes'. Most if not all, club members would do so as a sport or for hunting, such as rabbits, which BTW are a tasty morsel when roasted fresh, with rosemary and garlic, and baby potatoes.
So, yes, as far as I'm aware, ordinary citizens who carry unlicensed or illegal arms, are committing a crime in Australia.
What I can also say is that it does not necessarily follow that this so-called reduction in number of illegal weapons in the community is somehow directly related to the increase of break-ins and assaults on the elderly. I can't imagine it's because hundreds of grannies have suddenly decided to hand in their sub machine guns. Not unless they are related to the hells angels of-course, and they would NEVER hand them in.
beachgirl7: actually this is factually incorrect.......
yeah i forgot, you were there when i came back from the states, and landed in brisbane... didnt see you there writing everything down...
or was it you, that was seeing if my photo was a phony or not on my passport... and im not sure if it was you, who ask where i lived in brisbane, and to spell it out...
so you seem to know, what is factually incorrect, why you inlighten everyone what really happen, in your factually incorrect way that is!!!!

Exactly.
So there is little point, with all due respect, Sassy, in highlighting the plight of your Aussie friend.

I am not pushing anything, I have no reason to.
One of my best friends is a retired cop here in Arizona, he sent me this email, I am simply asking.
The Right to Selfdefense is an Individual's Right! Anyone denying me the means to exercise that Right is as guilty as the Criminal that might take my Life because I lack those Means!

Dont think for 1 minute that law abiding citizens who have guns here protecting themselves from harms way is that easy! One gunman is dead and now my son doesnt have a business as the premises he was renting for his business has been taken off him because all the publicity ect! Not only that my family have to watch our backs! Just cant fathom how you work your guts to make a decent living and then with a blink of an eye it all becomes a nightmare!
